Béla Bartók composed the series of forty-four violin duos in 1931, prompted by the German violin teacher Erich Doflein. With the exception of numbers 35 and 36, all the pieces are based on original folk melodies, and the majority were collected by the composer himself during his numerous field trips in the Carpathian Basin. The melody for No. 42 was collected by Bartók in Algeria. Universal Edition (Vienna) published the violin duos in 1933 in four volumes, arranged in order of difficulty. The present transcription faithfully follows the original. Fingerings are by the editor.

Bartók probably first played pieces by Domenico Scarlatti in public in 1911. During the next two decades he featured them in his piano recitals more than 60 times. His dedication to Italian and French Baroque music is also illustrated by the fact that, in 1920, he signed a contract with the Budapest publisher Rozsnyai to edit seven volumes of Baroque keyboard music. His plan was to select compositions by Couperin and Rameau in addition to pieces by Scarlatti, but during the 1920s it ended up being only two volumes of Couperin and another two comprising ten compositions by Scarlatti. In editing these masterpieces, Bartók's aim was primarily to counterbalance or evenovershadow the works by the Mendelssohn-Schumann epigones used in primary and secondary music education. The present, single-volume collection comprises Bartók's two Scarlatti volumes, complete with an editorial preface, his detailed performing instructions, and his commentary. The editor recommends these compositions for pianists with at least five years' experience, and gives practical recommendations for the grouping of individual items to form charming sonatina-like sets of pieces. Mit der Veröffentlichung dieser Meisterwerke beabsichtigte Bartók in erster Linie, den Mendelssohn-Schumann-Epigonen bereits in der Musikausbildung in der Grund- und Mittelstufe entgegenwirken und ihre Werke in den Hintergrund treten zu lassen.
Die vorliegende Publikation versammelt in einem Band das Material der beiden mit Bartóks Vorwort, detaillierten Vortragsanweisungen und Anmerkungen erschienenen Scarlatti-Hefte. Der Herausgeber empfiehlt PianistInnen diese Kompositionen seit mindestens fünf Jahren zum Klavier spielen und gibt auch praktische Vorschläge dafür, wie man die einzelnen Stücke zu einem attraktiven Sonatina-artigen Ganzen gruppieren kann.

The great violinist Yehudi Menuhin commissioned Bartok for a new work, and Bartok responded with the Sonate. When first Menuhin saw the work, he deemed it unplayable! Upon further inspection, the composition began to make sense, and Menuhin would ultimately hail it as the most important composition for violin alone since Bach. Similarly, Dejour - captivated by the Sonate - would have grave doubts about transcribing such a virtuosic masterpiece for violin for his own instrument, the guitar. He, too, came to realize that the Sonate could well transfer to the guitar, with its chord progressions, contrapuntal motion, and more. While still demanding of virtuosity, the Sonate is now available as a masterpiece for guitar.

Bartok's Allegro barbaro is a favorite of keyboard-mashing pianists, with its driving rhythms and sudden forceful outbursts. Arranging a piece like this for solo guitar is no small feat, yet Steinkogler has artfully accomplished just that, overcoming many technical challenges to bring the Bartok to six strings. For the accomplished guitarist, this would be a fantastic concert closer or encore piece.

The series For Children (together with Mikrokosmos) belongs undoubtedly to the basic works of piano instuction. It is learned from almost all over the world, its sheet music edition is sold by Boosey & Hawkes and EMB in territorial distribution. The present edition was prepared by the composer's son Peter Bartok living in the United States who used all available manuscripts and other documents which helped clarify the uncertainties concerning the music text. In order to meet this objective, a completely new engraving was made and the editor described the historical background of the emergence and the editions of the work as well as the nature of the corrections. The third and fourth parts based on Slovak folksongs appear now contracted to one volume with Hungarian, German and Slovak titles, folksong texts and notes of the editor in Hungarian and German.
