Appalachian fiddle music, based on the musical traditions of the people who settled in the mountainous regions of the southeastern United States, is widely-known and played throughout North America and parts of Europe because of its complex rhythms, its catchy melodies, and its often-ancient-sounding stylistic qualities. The authors explore the lives and music of 43 of the classic Appalachian fiddlers who were active during the first half of the 20th century. Some of them were recorded commercially in the 1920s, such as Gid Tanner, Fiddlin? John Carson, and Charlie Bowman. Some were recorded by folklorists from the Library of Congress, such as William Stepp, Emmett Lundy, and Marion Reece. Others were recorded informally by family members and visitors, such as John Salyer, Emma Lee Dickerson, and Manco Sneed. All of them played throughout most of their lives and influenced the growth and stylistic elements of fiddle music in their regions. Each fiddler has been given a chapter with a biography, several tune transcriptions, and tune histories. To show the richness of the music, the authors make a special effort to show the musical elements in detail, but also acknowledge that nothing can take the place of listening. Many of the classic recordings used in this book can be found on the web, allowing you to hear and read the music together.

Divers petits fragments successifs brossent le caractère de “Monsieur Brossini†: tantôt héro que, tantôt impressionniste et romantique, parfois passionné et fougueux, mais aussi fragile et émouvant, et toujours avec humour.La mélodie de la chanson Happy Birthday a été composée par deux sœurs américaines, Patty et Mildred J. Hill, en 1893, lorsqu’elles enseignaient Louisville dans le Kentucky. En 1990, cette mélodie fut vendueaux éditions Warner Chappell pour la coquette somme de quinze millions de dollars.D’après le Livre Guinness des Records, Happy Birthday est l’air le plus chanté de tous les temps. Les orchestrations sont multiples et couvrent une pléiade de combinaisons instrumentales. Quant au texte, il a été traduit dans presque toutes les langues. The symposium brought together 112 participants from 12 nations across six continents and 24 U.S. states to learn of each other’s work, establish collaborations and professional networks, and shape new directions for research in this important area of music education at the University of Florida in Gainesville from March 19–22, 2019. The two keynote addresses and 31 papers published in this volume document music assessment practice and the measurement and evaluation of music learning across the world in local, state, and national contexts at all levels. The attendees also attended special work sessions to begin developing a set of assessment literacy standards for music teachers based on the International Principles for Assessment in Music Education (developed and introduced by the co-chairs at ISAME6 in 2017), and their discussions are summarized in this collection. As music educators across the world come to terms with increased expectations for accountability of learning in music, the scholars and practitioners who have contributed to this volume provide insight to guide their work.
