Christmas is full of customs and traditions, both old and new. This is especially evident in Christmas songs, some of which have been part of Christian worship for centuries. A Medieval Christmas combines three ancient melodies that are stillpopular around the world today. Philip Sparke chose Gaudete, a song of praise from the middle ages, Coventry Carol, an English song from the 14th century, and In dulci jubilo, which can also be traced back to the 14th century, toform this joyous suite.

Though not as familiar as other holiday carols, this ancient melody has an intrinsic beauty in both its shape and harmonic support. Reflecting those elements, this arrangement creates an evocative sound world. The mood is inspired by viewing the expanse of the night sky. Throughout history, we as humans are connected, in a sense, by the fact that we look up at the same pattern of stars today as those who created this ancient tune so many years ago, which suggests a point of connection over time. In this arrangement you will find a sense of wonder and awe as the melody weaves its way between consonance and dissonance. The re-imagining of this medieval carol reflects the timeless nature of the Christmas season. Students will work on sustaining long tones and tuning non-traditional chords in this choral-like setting for string orchestra. Courtly Procession and Dances brings the royal courts of medieval Europe to life at your next concert! The work opens with a stately brass and percussion fanfare. The courtly procession follows, and is played by the full ensemble. A slower, lyrical dance contrasts with the procession and eventually leads into a light-hearted and lively dance featuring very playable woodwind lines. The work concludes with a restatement of the processional. Courtly Procession and Dances is fresh, highly melodic, and great for variety in concert programming.

Here’s an engaging and imaginative work for developing musicians that has the added benefit of providing great teaching opportunities! Into The Dragon's Keep opens and closes with a haunting flute/optional piccolo solo that will leave your students feeling like they just stepped into a story. Utilizing an open drone in the low brass throughout, giving it a very medieval and Celtic sound, your students will be engaged as they learn about playing in contrasting meters of 3/4 and 6/8, and in Dorian mode. Highly recommended!

This piece is about a medieval legend, The Treasure of Zolverknapp, thatis associated with the region around the village Zolver in Luxembourg. It tells the tale of hidden treasure, brave knights, fierce battles, silverand jewels and a devil?s curse! All of these combine to make The Legendof Celobrium a legendary concert work.

Odilia is an up-tempo and joyful ode to Baume-les-Dames, a village in the department of Doubs in Franche-Comté, Eastern France. The title is derived from the legend of Odilia of Alsace (venerated as Saint Odilia, or Odile), the daughter of the Duke of Alsace. She was born blind, and literally saw the light at the age of twelve at the convent of Baume-les-Dames. From this miraculous occurrence, she was dubbed Odilia — child of light.Jacob de Haan was inspired by medieval dance music for the opening of this composition. In the slow movement that follows, a lyrical minor theme builds to a dramatic climax, which is followed by a calm passage featuring the repeatedlyrical theme. Finally, the medieval motif returns, this time presented in a festive gospel version.
