Sing, Choirs! is a library in miniature. It contains many of the Christian church's popular traditional anthems, including at least one example that will be suitable for each of the major services of the year. A number of Anglican chants (Psalms, Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis) are included, set out in a way that should enable those who are unfamiliar with the style to perform them easily. The selection of movements from the Mass can be used to enrich the music of the liturgy in services. Many of the works in Sing, Choirs! are presented in their original form, such as Bruckner's Locus Iste and Mozart's Laudate Dominum . Others are arrangements, adaptations or longer pieces, abridged to bring them into the scope of a useable anthem, including choral arrangements of Handel's Largo , the Ave Marias by Schubert and by Bach and Gounod, and Franck's Panis Angelicus amongst many others. This collection has practicability as a priority. The Organ parts can be played on either the Piano or the Keyboard. The Ash-tree reaches all the way into the sky and has three roots each growing into three different places. One root grows into the “Land ofHel” (Hel is the goddess of Hell) called “Helheim” another into the “Land of Frost-Giants” called “Jotunheim” and one root grows into the “Land of men” called “Asgard”. And the Ash-tree reaches into the sky. In the crown of the tree lives a squirrel which moves fast around the tree and spreads gossip both between the three roots and between three roots and the crown of the tree.The Edda is a large collection of Old Norse poems collected in the 12th Century by the Icelandic poet and historian Snorri Sturluson.   Sunleif Rasmussen March 2015

Ce célèbre chant de Noël anglo-saxon (dont la mélodie est également connue sous le nom d?Humility) a été composé en 1771 par John Goss (1800-1880) sur un texte d?Edward Caswall (1841-1878). John Goss est né à Fareham dans le Comté du Hampshire en Angleterre. En 1811 il est admis comme choriste à la Chapelle Royale où il étudie auprès de John Stafford Smith et de Thomas Attwood organiste à la cathédrale Saint-Paul de Londres. En 1824 il est nommé organiste à l?église Saint-Luc de Chelsea. À la mort de Thomas Attwood en 1838 John Goss lui succède comme organiste à la cathédrale Saint-Paul. Il compose de nombreux motets et odes pour divers services religieuxexceptionnels célébrés en la cathédrale. En 1872 il quitte son poste à Saint-Paul et est fait chevalier par la reine Victoria. Parallèlement à ses fonctions d?organiste à l?église Saint-Luc et à la cathédrale Saint-Paul John Goss a enseigné l?harmonie à l?Académie Royale de Musique de Londres pendant quarante-sept ans. Parmi ses nombreuses odes encore chantées on peut citer Infant Holy Infant Lowly Praise My Soul et See Amid the Winter's Snow.
