Throughout his life, Liszt's imagination was almost obsessed with notions of death and mourning. He composed many works on these topics, such as Pensée des morts, Funérailles, the two versions of La lugubre gondola, and Totentanz (Dance of Death), based on the Gregorian Dies irae sequence depicting the horrors of the Last Judgement. The latter project matured over a period of several decades, beginning in 1830, when Liszt heard the premiere of Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique, whose finale includes the Dies irae theme. Along with this musical impression, Liszt was stirred by horrifying visual representations of the dance of death by Holbein and Buffalmacco. Totentanz, composed asa series of variations, was finally completed during Liszt's Weimar period as one of its most outstanding compositions. Series I of the complete edition, launched in 1970 (original two-hands piano works, volumes 1-18), was completed in 1985, and with the publication of this volume Series II (transcriptions of works by other composers, volumes 1-24) has come to an end. The works contained in this volume are from Liszt's so-called 'late' period. This publication is available in two versions: bound in blue linen, or in grey boards. As supplements to the final versions already published in the New Liszt Edition, in this series early versions are being published. The present volume contains the seven pieces from the Swiss years of the Annees de pelerinage, together with the three pieces known as the Trois morceaux suisses, as they first appeared as part of the series Album d'un voyageur. Another work that may be of interest is a later version of the Clochette fantasia that remained unpublished in Liszt's lifetime. The description and evaluation of the sources and the notes included in the volume are detailed and full enough to satisfy all scolary requirements.

Franz Liszt (1811-1886) started work on his CONCERTO FOR PIANO AND ORCHESTRA No. 2 in A major, S. 125, in 1839 and 1840. Putting it through a series of revisions, he dedicated the concerto to his student Hans von Bronsart von Schellendorf. The composer conducted the first performance in Weimar on January 7, 1857 with Bronsart as soloist. Liszt completed a 4th revision in 1861. Less virtuosic than his first piano concerto, it is played without break and serves as a masterful example of thematic transformation. As an inexhaustible proponent of Beethoven's life and work, Franz Liszt (1811-1886) produced a number of arrangements and transcriptions in homage to the great composer. This lovely arrangement of Liebestraum is from a set of three solo piano compositions that were published by Liszt in 1850 based on love poems. Number 3 of the group by the German author Freiligrath is subtitled Notturno, the poem being about unconditional love and is one of the most popular of Liszt's works.This arrangement by Ed Hayes and Frank Harmantas is about 3 minutes in length and is suitable for intermediate to moderately advanced performers. Commisioned by the municipality of Debrecen.Ãkos Zarándy was born in 1982, Budapest. He finished his studies in choir-conducting and in composition under János Vajda and Zoltán Jeney at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music. In 2009, the first parts of his first opera entitled Las dos Fridas were performed in his diploma concert. In 2011, his symphonic piece entitled Nightmare Symphony was selected and performed within the frame of UMZF, the most important Hungarian composition competition. In 2011, he was among the winners of the one-act opera competition of the National Cultural Fund in Hungary. In 2014 and 2016 he received the Kodály Composer Grant. Zarándy has regularlyparticipated in contemporary music festivals in Hungary (Music of Our Age, Budapest Autumn Festival, Con Spirito, Béla Bartók International Choir Competition, International Bartók Seminar and Festival) and also in abroad (Gaudeamus Music Week, Ostrava Days). Many of his pieces have been performed in Austria, the Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Sweden, Turkey, the United States and Mexico.

The composer Lajos Papp was born in 1935 in Debrecen. He began his musical education at the Conservatory in Debrecen and continued at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest as a student of Ferenc Szabó and László Somogyi, where he graduated in 1960 with a degree in composition. From 1971 to 1973 he studied in Switzerland at the conservatory in Basel with Klaus Huber and Helmut Lachermann. Since 1973 he teaches piano and music theory at the music school in Oldenburg. In addition to lecture pieces, his oeuvre consists to a large extent of pieces of music education.
