Le légendaire violoniste génois Niccolò Paganini (Gênes, 27 octobre 1782 - Nice, 27 mai 1840) est probablement l'unique grand compositeur du passé à avoir voué une attention constante à la guitare et, quoiqu'il n'en ait jamais joué dans des concerts publics, divers témoignages nous sont parvenus sur son habileté de guitariste. La guitare a représenté pour le maître génois l'instrument harmonique et accompagnateur par excellence, au point qu'elle occupe dans sa production le rôle que les compositeurs de son temps confiaient normalement au piano. Paganini a écrit 140 pièces pour guitare seule et presque toutes ses oeuvres pour cordes (pour violon, principalement : sonates, duos, trios, quatuors et même certains concertos pour violon et orchestre) furent conçues avec un accompagnement de guitare. Le choix anthologique est basé sur l'intention d'extraire de cette surabondance dispersive les pièces qui représentent au mieux l'esprit et l'originalité de Paganini. De nos jours il faut, pour rendre cette musique accessible à n'importe quel interprète, la compléter par une réalisation polyphonique des parties : cette édition se conforme au style des éditeurs viennois de l'époque de Mauro Giuliani, c'est-à-dire qu'elle écrit séparément la voix supérieure et la basse, reliant tous les remplissages harmoniques à ces deux voix principales. C'est du reste à ce type d'écriture, que s'appliquent toutes les pratiques d'exécution en vigueur à cheval entre la fin du XVIIIe et les premières années du XIXe siècle. / Guitare

C'est tout naturellement que ces deux musiciens, par ailleurs passionnés de pédagogie, ont voulu créer une passerelle entre les classes de percussions traditionnelles et classiques. Les pièces présentées dans ce recueil sont de styles variés, offrant un large éventail de musiques : classique, traditionnelle, originale. Elles revêtent toutes un indéniable intérêt pédagogique, tant d'un point de vue technique que de l'interprétation et de la connaissance des styles. Percussionniste et chanteur, Paul Mindy, professeur au CNR d'Aubervilliers-la-Courneuve, est spécialiste des musiques du Brésil. Il anime des masterclasses dans le monde entier. Il reçoit le prix Georges Brassens et se produit en tant que chanteur à l'Olympia. Il reçoit également en 2001 le prix de l'Assemblée Nationale et en 2002 le prix de l'Académie Charles Cros. Son talent de percussionniste lui a permis de jouer avec de grands musiciens : Richard Galliano, Roland Dyens, Carlo Rizzo, Franck Tortillier, Dave Samuel, Baden Powell... Il joue aussi avec le groupe 'Quai #5', l'Orchestre pour la paix, Flavio Esposito. Sa discographie comprend des enregistrements en solo (Le monde à l'envers, Mosaïque), en trio avec J.C. Hoarau et A. Vérité (Notre Brésil), et avec la chanteuse Fabienne Magnant (Canto instrumental), un DVD 'méthode pour percussion africaine, brésilienne et cubaine' (site internet www.drumvision.fr.st). Paul Mindy est aussi l'auteur de livres-CD à succès aux éditions Didier Jeunesse : A l'ombre de l'olivier, Comptines du Baobab, Papagaio, Comptines créoles... En 2006, il participe au festival Percpan à Salvador de Bahia. Eric Sammut a débuté ses études musicales par l'apprentissage du piano, puis a suivi la classe de percussion de Michel Ventula au CNR de Toulouse. En 1989, l'année même où il obtient un premier prix à l'unanimité dans la classe de François Dupin et Georges van Gucht au CNSM de Lyon, Eric Sammut entre comme premier percussionniste à l'Orchestre de l'Opéra National de Lyon. Puis en 1995, le premier prix international de marimba de New York lui est décerné - il effectue alors une tournée de récitals et de masterclasses aux Etats-Unis, mais aussi en Europe et au Japon. Il enseigne le marimba au CNR de Toulouse depuis 1997, au CNR de Paris, ainsi qu'à la Royal Academy of London, et il est soliste à l'Orchestre de Paris. Après avoir participé à de nombreux enregistrements discographiques et vidéos avec l'Orchestre du Capitole de Toulouse, l'Orchestre National de Bordeaux-Aquitaine, l'Orchestre National de Lyon, l'Orchestre de l'Opéra National de Lyon, l'Orchestre de Paris, il réalise en 2005 un album de marimba solo, 'Four-Mallet Ballet'. Un enregistrement pour un nouveau CD est prévu en 2006, avec les musiciens Philippe Berrod, Eric Echampard et David Patrois. Antonio Carlos Jobim a dit un jour que la première bossa avait été composée par Chopin avec ce prélude. Nicolò Paganini?s trios for strings and guitar make up a small but significant group of pieces consisting of five works of different lengths, formal structure and difficulty: the Serenata in F major M.S. 115, the Terzetto in A minor M.S. 116, the Serenata in C major M.S. 17, the Terzetto concertante in D major M.S. 114, and the Terzetto in D major M.S. 69. Within this group, the Terzetto M.S. 116 and the Serenata M.S. 116 make up a small diptych for two violins and guitar that can be traced back to Paganini?s juvenile period (1796-1804). In addition to using the same musical formation, the two pieces also share some compositional features, regarding general formal characteristics as well as the order and the number of movements. Despite their simplicity, the two compositions still have features typical of Paganini?s writing from this period such as their spontaneous cantabilità, the freshness of their musical ideas, pleasant (if perhaps a little naive), and the well-defined sense of form that comes out in these small compositions.

Paganini’s Inno patriottico con variazioni for solo violin M.S. 81 is a composition dating back to the period between 1796 and 1800, during which he also composed works such as the Carmagnola con variazioni M.S. 1 for violin and guitar, the Grande Concerto M.S. 75, the Tema variato for violin M.S. 82 and the Sonata a violin solo M.S. 83. There is not very much background material regarding the piece: the only certainties we have about it are that it dates from his early period, springs from a Genovese environment and has numerous similarities to the Carmagnola con variazioni M.S. 1: both compositions are based on a sprightly popular theme in 6/8 that can be traced back to the Perigordino, a French dance that first appeared in the Ligurian Apennines during the Napoleonic period. The structure of the Inno patriottico con variazioni substantially follows that of the Carmagnola and Tema variato: a theme followed by a series of variations in which Paganini demonstrates his personal concept of variation. This edition is based on a recently rediscovered, non-autograph source owned by the descendants of Eredi Sivori, in combination with the copy held by the Archivio Storico del Comune di Genova and printed sources./ Répertoire / Violon

M.S. 44 for solo violin is a work that is practically unknown in its original form consisting of two movements respectively Andante and Presto. The first (Andante) is a variation based on Paisello?s theme (notated on two staffs to differentiate the bowed and pizzicato effects): while the second (Presto) is a virtuosic variation. It is much less famous than Carl Guhr?s version entitled Introduction et Variations sur le Thème «Nel cor più non mi sento» pour le violon seul de Nicolo Paganini which he included in his ?treatise?. Guhr?s version for which we have no surviving original source has been published repeatedly. It is much longer and has got many more variations than the original Capriccio the latter often considered a kind of ?first sketch? of the longer work. Guhr?s version has in many ways overshadowed Paganini?s so that the originality of the latter?s composition and its integrity as a self-standing piece have not been sufficiently appreciated. The present critical edition is based upon an autograph manuscript found in the Berlin Staatsbibliothek. It is compared to both the Zimmermann edition (1960) rather unreliable from a philological point of view: and the ?Tema? and ?Settima variazione? (which ?correspond? to the two movements of the Capriccio) from B. Schott?s Söhne (1829) edition.

Edizione critica di Italo Vescovo-Paganini’s Sonata a violino solo (M.S. 6) composed during his Lucca period (1805-1809) forms part of a series of music written for solo violin that has failed to attract the attention of both performers and scholars interested in Genoa’sfamous violinist. This work – published several times in the nineteenth century (especially outside Italy with various titles: Duetto per un violino solo Duo Merveille Meraviglia di Paganini word etc.) – is divided into twomovements (Adagio – Allegro molto). Paganini used a two-staff system of musical notation to produce two distinct levels of sound as well as graphically: pizzicato on the lower line arco on the upper. It is a short pleasing piece containing all the typical characteristics one expects from Paganini: melody and instrumental virtuosity.This critical edition based on the autograph kept at the Biblioteca Casanatense in Rome as part of a collection of the most important editions from the 1800s and 1900s is intended to provide scholars and performers a philologically reliable textthat revives the original version.

This Capriccio per violino solo M.S. 54 should be considered as part of the group of short musical dedications that Paganini was in the habit of giving away to friends, colleagues and the personalities he met during his travels. Dated 1828, dedicated to Count Maurizio Dietrichstein, is a truly unique work, not only for the way in which the music is organised (notated on four staves, one for each string) but also because of the way in which it was conceived musically. The concept of polyphony is brought to an extreme level, at least in conceptual and visual terms, in this composition. Its brief structure is reminiscent of a kind of four-part chorale written in score. It is characterised by its lyrical and elegant writing style, where the four voices move in polyphonic fashion, giving birth to an extremely refined harmonic texture.
