With his piano cycle Pictures at an Exhibition from 1874, Mussorgsky created a classic example of programme music. Based on the paintings of his deceased friend Viktor Hartmann, he also composed the lyrical serenade 'Il vecchio castello' (The Old Castle), among others. Hartmann's picture shows a medieval Italian castle with a singing troubadour who accompanies himself on the lute. In Maurice Ravel's subsequent famous orchestral version, the beautiful, melancholy melody was played by the alto saxophone. Accompaniment, prelude and interludes are reminiscent of playing a medieval hurdy-gurdy with its pervading drone bass. Therein lies the continuity of the piece, thereabove lies the quiet romance with its melancholy character - the unrequited love of the troubadour. This separate edition now gives all saxophonists the opportunity to play the piece with piano accompaniment.

Missa brevis for mixed choir and eight wind instruments Op. 5 was created in 1951 and premiered at the Donaueschingen Festival of Contemporary Music the following year. The Ordinary of the Mass (Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Agnus Dei) was composed using a modal technique drawing on medieval examples. The use of wind instruments adds to the rich sound of the choir, thus expanding the sound spectrum in an interesting way. The piece is suitable for both liturgy and concert. Hummel wrote a music which is easy to play by all performers and delights the listeners immediately.

Ecce Sacerdos Magnus (Behold the Great Priest) comes from the early European tradition of plainchant. Bruckner's setting of the responsory, originally scored for eight-part mixed choir, organ and three trombones, brings certain medieval qualities to an otherwise Romantic-era composition. This transcription for 10-part brass choir is appropriate for intermediate level and above and attempts to retain the majesty, power, and beauty of the original piece. It should be approached as a choral piece: connected and fluid. The harmonic language is essentially triadic; great care should be taken in the tuning of each chord throughout the piece. Instrumentation is for: 3 Trumpets in B-flat, 2 Horns, 3 Trombones, Euphonium and Tuba.
