So I asked the composers to write a Prelude of the kind that Tarrega wrote and which count among his most significant compositions.These Preludes for Tarrega, all written between August and November 2015, are very different from each other. The common feature, however, between these and the Preludes by Tarrega is their brevity, an average level of performance difficulty and guaranteed easy listening, even when written in a non-tonal language (like the meditative and melancholy piece by Emilio Calandin and the one by Marco Smaili, with its Impressionistic feel reminding one of Tarrega's most famous pupil, Miguel Llobet).In some Preludes (the ones by Paolo Ugoletti, Roberto Tagliamacco, Claudia Montero) the reference to Lagrima, one of Tarrega's most famous Preludes, is evident in form, title and some citations. Ugoletti and Tagliamacco work well and expressively on harmony and counterpoint, while the Argentinian Claudia Montero links Tarrega to a heartbreaking Buenos Aires...In Alessandro Spazzoli there is rather more a connection with Tarrega's sense of melody and deep simplicity, while Marco Reghezza remembers ironically what was brewing in European music when Tarrega was alive: in fact, his Como Preludio goes across the 24 keys - and even a reference to Wagner's Tristan raises its head...I am delighted for this volume to come out at the time of the fiftieth edition of the Certamen Tarrega.(Piero Bonaguri).

The aim of the edition is to present the composer's original text as authentically as possible. This is not an easy task. The source materials of Karlowicz's music are very diverse in nature. Apart from most of the songs, the composer prepared for printing and published in his lifetime the following: Serenade for Strings Op. 2, Prelude and Fugue Op. 5, Concerto in A major for Violin and Orchestra Op. 8, Returning Waves Op. 9 and Eternal Songs Op. 10. Being highly experienced in writing for a symphony orchestra, and knowledgeable in the modern method of instrumentation in the neoromantic style, he prepared his scores with great care. The remaining symphonic poems were not published before the composer's death; and the 'Rebirth' Symphony, the manuscript of which miraculously survived the ravages of World War II, was issued only in 1993, as part of the present Complete Works edition. During this war the autographs of the most compositions by Karlowicz, including all his symphonic poems (except for The Sorrowful Tale), were lost. The present publication, therefore, is based as a rule on the first editions, compared with extant autographs or authorized copies of the scores. The amendments of misprints or self-evident mistakes on the part of the composer are not indicated graphically in the text but referred to in the Editorial Notes.

György Orbán (born 1947) is among the most frequently performed contemporary Hungarian composers. His style incorporates a characteristic mix of classical, modern, cinematic, and jazz elements. In addition, he claims he ''loves splashing about in tonality,'' which makes his works accessible to the wider public. Owing to his humor and imagination, he finds an easy path to children, as demonstrated by the popularity of his piano works specifically intended for beginners. He composed close to 70 short children s pieces for Ãgnes Lakos s four-volume Friendly Piano Tutor (Z. 14749-14756), later published separately as Enchanted Forest (Z. 14742). The New Bell includes 19 piano piecesfor beginners among others, we encounter a baby elephant now and again (perhaps paying a visit from Debussy s Children s Corner?) and we hear the awful clamor of a most outgoing granny s alarm clock as well as the solemn tolling of a new church-bell. The pieces are arranged in order of difficulty and even include a few items for three hands which may be played by a pupil with the teacher or another student.
