Gustav Holst's The Wandering Scholar a one-act chamber opera for Baritone Soprano Tenor Bass and Orchestra. Edited by Benjamin Britten and Imogen Holst. Full score and Orchestral parts are availble for hire. The Wandering Scholar Holst’s last opera was written in 1929-30 and was first performed in The David Lewis Theatre Liverpool in 1934 conducted by Dr. J. E. Wallace and produced by Frederick Wilkinson. This was a few months before Holst’s death and he was too ill to go to the performance. He had no chance to revise the score which has remained unpublished until now. He leftseveral pencil queries in the margins such as ‘Tempo?’ ‘More?’ ‘More harmony?’ etc. And in one of his note-books he left queries about several words in the libretto which he had doubts about. The editors have answered these queries by making some alterations in speed and dynamics and by suggesting metronome marks throughout the work. They have also made several alterations in the libretto which they feel that Holst might have made himself if he had had the chance to revise the work with his friend Clifford Bax.

One of Holst's most under-appreciated works Ode To Death (Op. 38) was written in 1919 in response to the First World War and mourned his friends who had died in that conflict. Scored for SATB Chorus and Orchestra it is a setting of the elegiac poem When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd by Walt Whitman. Gustav Holst (1874-1934) was an English composer and teacher. Having studied under Stanford and Parry he became a close friend of Vaughan Williams they would often critique each other’s work and influenced composers such as Tippet and Britten. He is best remembered for his Planets suite.

Holst composed this one of his better-known chamber works on a visit to a festival in Ann Arbor Michigan in 1923. The first movement has been described as a dialogue between the two solo instruments while the second movement recalls Holst’s love of Bach. The seriousness of the final movement is undercut by the introduction of the old British dance tune ‘If all the world were paper”.

In 1921 Holst was commissioned to write a piece without much notice for a dance company in Chicago however the piece was never performed despite Holst's unsucessful attempts.

Score-Symphony no. 1 (1942) reflects the neo-classical influences of studies with Walter Piston and Gustav Holst at Harvard (1926-32) and with Stravinskian disciple and master pedagogue Nadia Boulanger in Paris.

Invocation was composed in 1911 and first performed on May 2nd of that year in the Queen's Hall London by May Mukle with the New Symphony Orchestra conducted by Landon Ronald. The work received several performances with Piano accompaniment before 1914 but with the public success of The Planets it became one of many works that Holst never had time to revise or publish. A certain amount of editing of dynamics and phrasing has been necessary and the Piano reduction has occasionally been slightly adjusted to match the orchestral accompaniment more closely.
