Cantata BWV 127 belongs to the cycle of chorale cantatas which Bach performed in 1724/25 in Leipzig. It bears close links to the St John Passion, which was performed on Good Friday 1725 in its second version. In formal terms and in the interpretation of the text and its orchestration, it is one of the most astonishing vocal works by Bach. The opening chorus, with its multi-layered construction, is nothing less than a preliminary version for the chorale fantasia O Mensch bewein dein Sunde gross. The aria Die Seele ruht in Jesu Handen is distinguished by its exquisite scoring: a solo oboe and the soprano form a duet, whilst the background comprises delicate chords on recorders and continuo, intended to symbolize funeral bells. A solo trumpet gives the following movement particular brilliance. The words Ich breche mit starker und helfender Hand unmistakably anticipate the chorus Sind Blitze, sind Donner in Wolken verschwunden from the St Matthew Passion. New revised edition. The Iowa Tests of Music Literacy are the only nationally standardized music achievement tests published in the United States. These tests are designed to (1) evaluate students’ continual growth in music achievement, (2) diagnose individual students’ strengths and weaknesses in music achievement, and (3) compare students’ relative standing in music achievement. There are a total of six levels in this series, and each level is sequentially more difficult. All six levels are organized into two parts: Tonal Concepts and Rhythm Concepts. Each of these parts takes 45 minutes to administer and will yield information on listening, reading, and writing. Levels 1, 2, and 3 are appropriate for Grades 4 through 12, and Levels 4, 5, and 6 are appropriate for Grades 7 through 12. This is followed by Jelly Roll Morton?s Jelly Roll Blues. Composed in 1915 and was one of the first published jazz compositions. Johnny St. Cyr was a famous New Orleans musician who played both guitar and the six-string banjo. He recorded with Louis Armstrongs Hot Five and Hot Seven bands. He also played with Jelly Roll Mortons Red Hot Peppers. His Guitar Blues is a tour-de-force and challenge for any fingerstyle guitarist. We finish our lesson with the Mineola Rag first recorded by the East Texas Serenaders.
