Ohne Zweifel gehört The Ragtime Dance zu den bekannteren der vielen Ragtime-Kompositionen Joplins. Die Frische und Unbekümmertheit der Melodien in den ersten drei Abschnitten gefällt unmittelbar. Wie bei Klavier-Ragtimes üblich, liegt das melodische Geschehen durchweg in der rechten Hand, die linke Hand begleitet mit der von Marsch und Polka bekannten Vorschlag-Nachschlag-Figur. Die vorliegende Bearbeitung bringt mehr Abwechslung: Sopran- und Altsaxophon 1 wechseln sich ab, außerdem erscheinen bei Wiederholungen bestimmte Abschnitte eine Oktave höher oder tiefer, so dass auch die übrigen Instrumente des Quintetts am thematischen Geschehen Anteil haben können.
