Choir, 2 Pianos, 2 Percussions SKU: BO.B.3096 Composed by Manuel Oltra. I...(+)
Choir, 2 Pianos, 2 Percussions SKU: BO.B.3096 Composed by Manuel Oltra. Instrumental Sets. Published by Editorial de Musica Boileau (BO.B.3096). English comments: This is a symphonic-choral work based on the Latin text of Psalm 96 and written without a set plan, as the music merely aims to express the nature and purpose of the word. Its structure is therefore very free, similar to that of some medieval madrigalists. The small choir does not necessarily have to be separate from the large choir. It can be a part of it (half or a third). The use of a piano instead of a harp and the lack of violins in the orchestra seems quite fitting to the nature of the piece. However, this is not so unusual. Composed in 1967, it was first performed at the Palau de la Musica Catalana on 5 November 1971. There is also a version for choir, two pianos and two percussionists, which, due to its simplified number of musicians, has become more widely known.
$22.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 4 to 6 weeks

Concert Band/Harmonie - Grade 3 SKU: BT.DHP-1135395-140 Pop Overture for Band. Composed by Jacob De Haan. Concert and Contest Collection CBHA. Original Light Music. Score Only. Composed 2013. 18 pages. De Haske Publications #DHP 1135395-140. Published by De Haske Publications (BT.DHP-1135395-140). 9x12 inches. English-German-French-Dutch. Odilia is an up-tempo and joyful ode to Baume-les-Dames, a village in the department of Doubs in Franche-Comté, Eastern France. The title is derived from the legend of Odilia of Alsace (venerated as Saint Odilia, or Odile), the daughter of the Duke of Alsace. She was born blind, and literally saw the light at the age of twelve at the convent of Baume-les-Dames. From this miraculous occurrence, she was dubbed Odilia — child of light.Jacob de Haan was inspired by medieval dance music for the opening of this composition. In the slow movement that follows, a lyrical minor theme builds to a dramatic climax, which is followed by a calm passage featuring the repeatedlyrical theme. Finally, the medieval motif returns, this time presented in a festive gospel version.
$42.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Orchestra Cello, Contrabass, Piano, Viola, Violin 1, Violin 2, Violin 3 - Grade 2 SKU: CF.YAS68 Composed by Bill Calhoun. FS - SWS. Young String Orchestra. Set of Score and Parts. With Standard notation. 8+5+2+5+8+2+5+8 pages. Carl Fischer Music #YAS68. Published by Carl Fischer Music (CF.YAS68). ISBN 9780825869464. UPC: 798408069469. 8.5 X 11 inches. Key: A minor. This original composition from Bill Calhoun has a dark and rich texture in the tradition of medieval music. Meditation and Ritual has a seriousness to it that students will gravitate toward, and is an excellent choice for contest or festival performance. Meditation and Ritual is composed in the key of A minor and represents two contrasting styles. The first (“Meditationâ€) is a thought-provoking chorale. Each voice gains prominence through its lyrical quarter-note movement. The use of suspensions to create tension and release are prevalent throughout, which along with its dynamic shading help to create interest within thistender section. “Meditation†reaches its climax at m. 16 before ending with the warmth and emotion in which it began. After a very brief pause “Ritual†begins. Its medieval-sounding theme is characterized by the contrast between short and long (or slurred) articulations and is important to bring to your students’ attention in performance. The dance-like theme is portrayed in both the upper andlower voices and takes some interesting turns harmonically. After reaching a dramatic climax at m. 42, it quickly moves into a return to its opening character. After a brief and quieter move harmonically to C major, it forcefully returns to its original key. A short diminuendo takes the piece into a building flourish of eighth notes in the violins and violas, accompanied by descending quarter notes in the cellos and basses before coming to its dynamic conclusion. About Carl Fischer Young String Orchestra Series This series of Grade 2/Grade 2.5 pieces is designed for second and third year ensembles. | Stabat Mater Op. 53 PWM (Polskie Wydawnictwo Muzyczne)
Vocal, Mixed Choir and Orchestra SKU: BT.PWM5447 For Soprano, Alto, Ba...(+)
Vocal, Mixed Choir and Orchestra SKU: BT.PWM5447 For Soprano, Alto, Baritone, Mixed Choir and Orchestra. Composed by Karol Szymanowski. Classical. Book Only. Composed 2000. 68 pages. Polskie Wydawnictwo Muzyczne #PWM5447. Published by Polskie Wydawnictwo Muzyczne (BT.PWM5447). ''Stabat Mater'' by Karol Szymanowski for solo voices, chorus and orchestra, Op. 53, is one of the most famous and, at the same time, most personal works of the composer, making its appeal to the audience through the depth of its expression and sheer artistry. The first sketches of the work were made in the spring of 1925, while work on the full score occupied the composer from 20 January to 2 March 1926. Józef Jankowskis Polish translation of the medieval sequence formed the basis of the composition. This text, which was simple in a folk-like way, devoid of pathos but full of religious zeal, harmonized perfectly from the poetic point of view with the composers creative design. In an interview for the monthly Muzyka Szymanowski stated: ''in its Polish vestments that eternal, naive hymn was filled for me with its own immediate expressive content; it became something painted in colours which were recognisable and comprehensible as distinct from the black and white of the archaic original'' (''A Footnote to Stabat Mater'', Muzyka 1926, Nos. 11/12). In the score, the Latin text is given beside the Polish text, making it possible for the work to be performed more easily by foreign performers. In this work, the universal tradition of the Christian church was fused with the Polish religious tradition. The composer creates the religious folk-like climate primarily through the character of the melodies which are akin to to the plainchant melodies to the text of Stabat Mater (the sequence, and especially the hymn) and their paraphrases in Polish religious songs (e.g. Sta a Matka Bole ciwa [The Dolorous Mother was standing]) as well as motifs from Polish Lenten songs and Gorzkie ale (Bitter Laments). Szymanowski did not introduce them as quotations, but intersperses the melodic lines, which are more fully developed and frequently highly chromatic, with diatonic phrases, based on modal scales. They appear in all the movements of the work determining its cohesion. In dividing the twenty-stanza text into separate segments, Szymanowski created a six- movement cantata. He took care to distinguish between the emotional shades of the various movements, varying his selection of solo voices (soprano, contralto, baritone), the voices of the chorus (female or mixed) and the orchestral forces. In the first and third movements the lyrical idiom prevails; the first movement, portraying the Mother of God at the foot of the cross, has a narrative character, whereas the third is a kind of prayer from a man who sympathizes with, and who wishes to be associated with Mater Dolorosas pain. In these movements only the female voices are used (soprano, contralto and female chorus), while the orchestra is employed in a chamber style, sometimes drawing on solo accompanying parts (e.g. the beginning of the third movement). The fourth movement, which continues the mood of prayerful contemplation, is designed for soprano and contralto solo as well as unaccompanied chorus. On the other hand, the second and fifth movements, involving the participation of solo baritone and the full chorus and orchestra, are similar with regard to forces and their dramatic character, which is austere in expression, harsh in tone, and markedly dissonant. Here grand climaxes appear with powerful orchestral tutti. The sixth movement crowns the whole. The lyrical, soft melody of the solo soprano at the beginning is gradually strengthened by the addition of the female chorus and the solo contralto, and in the final section, the solo baritone as well as the tutti of chorus and orchestra. The conclusion, subdued and full of concentration, suggests the introvert character of the experience as opposed to its dramatic pathos. Stabat Mater by Szymanowski is part of a long tradition of compositions based on the text of the medieval sequence - ranging from polyphonic works by Josquin des Prés and Palestrina to the romantic Stabat by Giuseppe Verdi and Anton n Dvo ák. And it was perhaps because of his consciousness of this tradition that Szymanowski used stylizing devices in the spirit of early music. The archaization manifests itself not only in the character of the melodies and their modal framework, but also in the harmonies (with their predominance of triads, open fourths and fifths chords and doubled thirds), the simple rhythms as well as the texture of the choruses (esp. the fourth movement). The composer does not, however, imitate the style of any specific historical epoch, but combines resources taken from early music with modern tonal and harmonic techniques. Archaization in Stabat Mater serves, moreover, a symbolic function; in evoking the many-centuries old tradition of church music, it emphasizes the universal nature of the idea contained in the text of the sequence, while the re-reading of the text by the composer gives the work its individual features. Via Crucis is one of the most outstanding religious masterpieces from Liszt-s late creative period, and it depicts the story of the fourteen stations of Jesus' suffering. The work was not released during the composer-s lifetime due to its unusual and daring new sonorities. Based on his own dating, Liszt completed the composing process on February 26, 1879 in Budapest. The piece was originally written as fifteen short movements for solo vocalists, choir, and organ or harmonium, and its text was compiled by Liszt's partner, Carolyne von Sayn-Wittgenstein, using biblical excerpts, two medieval Latin hymns and two German Lutheran chorales. This volume, edited by Imre Mezo, contains German, English and Hungarian prefaces, as well as critical notes in English, which reveal valuable details about the history of the work. $29.45 - See more - Buy online

Kaija Saariaho?s Lonh scored for Soprano Voice and Electronics was commissioned by the Wien Modern Festival and premiered on the 20th October 1996. The title?Lonh meaning far away or distant is derived from the old Provençal language in which this piece is performed. The text itself a poem about distant love popular among the medieval scholars and poets is attributed to the medievaltroubadour Jaufré Rudel. Formally the piece loosely follows the form of the poem and is thus divided into nine sections. Some of the symmetrical and repeating aspects are found in the solo soprano part which as suchuses rather freely the elements for the original text so that the resulting text is rather a collage based on Rudel?s song. The necessary electronic materials can be downloaded from this page and can be run with a Max patch that includes infinite reverberation general reverberation and plays pre-recorded sound files. Cues in the scoremust be triggered by the Soprano with a sustain pedal (or by another musician at the mixing desk). For general technical notes see this page .

The Vocal Score for Judith Weir's Truly I Tell You a setting of three different Biblical passages from Psalms and Mark's gospel. This work was first performed by the Choir of Westminster Abbey at theCommonwealth Day Observance on the 9th of March 2015. It is arranged for SSATB Chorus and Organ. Truly I Tell You is a setting of Psalms 8: 4-10 and 34: 1-4 and Mark 10: 15. The thread thatmarries these three texts together is the comparison between man and the name of God the literal exposition of the word of God (working beautifully within the context of such a brilliantly-composed piece of music) and thehopeful entering of God's kingdom in general. In the December 2015 edition of RSCM Church Music Quarterly Magazine the reviewer states that this piece is 'highly recommended' and is a 'useful churchanthem that is not too difficult'. Judith Weir is a British composer whose music often draws influence from her many extra-musical interests such as medieval history and Scottish traditionalmusic. In 2005 Weir received a CBE for her services to music and in 2014 she was appointed the Master of the Queen's Music becoming the first female holder of a post which dates back to 1626.

Return To Avalon is scored for two flutes one doubling Piccolo the other doubling Alto Flute. In the mid-thirteenth century over 200 000 Cathars were murdered in the South of France 'Avalon' by forces of darkness and ignorance. The Cathars were European Buddhists who believed in loving each other that we are all equal in the eyes of God non-revenge vegetarianism and that women could be priests. They also believed in reincarnation. In answer to threats and bullying many of them chose to be burnt alive rather than be forced to follow teachings they believed to be untrue.People say that the Cathars never came back. People saythat they died in vain. But I believe that they are wrong I believe that the Cathars did come back to create a Church of light outside the constricts of religion but through the arts through music poetry and prose.'Return to Avalon' is the story of two great Cathar flute players who rise from the ashes of the Montsegur massacre to return and baptize the world into the truth of the eternal through the beauty of sound and honesty of expression. I imagined these 'Sons of the light ' playing this piece and letting its message of friendship and brotherhood echo out over the mountains.'Return to Avalon' begins with 'The Last Song' a 13th century Cathar melody echoed on alto flute then explores an idea I first used in my 1993 flute concerto the idea of orchestrated digital delay. The second movement 'Human flame' on piccolo and alto is also based on a medieval theme but takes it further and further out until finally it burns up into a huge fireball. In the third movement 'Sons of the light return to Avalon' the two flutes reappear Phoenix-like from the ashes leading and learning from each other. Eventually the flutes become inseparable as they interweave together at speed leading us to a higher truth that we are all brothers and sisters equally loved by God.Phenomenal flautist Samuel

The poem I Sing Of A Maiden is one of the best known of the anonymous medieval hymns deceptive in its simplicity and full of grace and faith. The setting by Lennox Berkeley also has a deceptivesimplicity but reveals on repeated listenings or performances a harmonic integrity and subtlely that has made it a work that will continue to be performed and enjoyed for a long time to come. Lennox Berkeley wascomposing and having his works performed before he finished school then upon meeting Ravel was introduced to legendary teacher Nadia Boulanger in Paris with whom he studied. He mixed with the great artistic and musicalnames of prewar Paris before returning to Britain where he later met and lived with Benjamin Britten before the arrival of Peter Pears in Britten’s life. Berkeley was professor of composition at the Royal Academy of Musicand himself composed more than two hundred works of music many of them of enduring value.

Harmonische Fantasie über ein Thema von Tallis. Par KNOX GARTH. Thomas Tallis (...(+)
Harmonische Fantasie über ein Thema von Tallis. Par KNOX GARTH. Thomas Tallis (1505–1585) was one of the great figures of English Renaissance music and the Third mode melody is probably his best known work, largely thanks to Vaughan Williams’s Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis.
In the manner of an illuminated manuscript, I wanted to illuminate this fascinating theme in three ways: from behind with medieval techniques like the ‘hoquetus’ passage of the opening or the dance at letter B, from in front with more contemporary sounds (letter A and similar), and from above with the extensive use of high harmonics. Almost all the notes of the theme fall very neatly on the ‘natural’ harmonics of the viola strings, and my ambition was to combine the ‘normal’ notes of the viola with its soaring harmonics, creating a rich luminous soundscape which reflects the spirituality of the theme.
Tallis’s melody returns repeatedly to the note B, and I interpreted this as a gentle invitation to simply be, in the sense of quiet moments of mediation. I decided to include a series of still points in the piece: the first one is in silence, the second reveals a note (B) that oscillates in a harmonic heartbeat, the third is a vibrating chord of B with harmonics, and on the last one the second viola tunes down the C string to B, then explores all the natural harmonics of this new world.
The term still point is of course a reference to the words of T.S. Eliot in his Four Quartets: 'At the still point of the turning world. Neither flesh nor fleshless; Neither from nor towards; at the still point, there the dance is.'

Shortly before his death Giovanni Pergolesi moved to the Franciscan monastery in Pozzuoli where he composed his last works. Among these is his Stabat mater - based on the medieval Latin poem. The piece reveals the infusion into church composition of the operatic style. Pergolesi's Stabat mater features a lively declamation of the text and great melodic appeal and expressiveness. Underlying everything is the contrapuntal background that was expected in music composed for the church at this time. This is is the full score of the original version which was written for Soprano and Alto Solos and small String Ensemble.

As well as eight of his personal favourites from J. S. Bach to Charles Ives the author includes seven new compositions of his own settings of medieval and traditional texts that reveal his skill as a choral composer whose command of style ranges from the humorous to the profound. In addition to sample programmes and translations there are invaluable notes on the performance and history of individual items plus an historical summary of the genre as a whole: everything in fact to make Christmas is Coming an indispensable companion for singers who wish to enrich the seasonal repertoire for concerts churches and traditional Yuletide carolling.

Christmas Carol-Lullay my liking was commissioned by BBC Music Magazine for the publication’s December 2014 issue. The brief was to compose a carol with simplicity of form and this Middle English 15th century carol text lent itself to an expressive yet succinct setting. The score is influenced by the revival in Christmas carols at the beginning of the 20th century that led many writers to compose in a quasi-medieval style exemplified by G R Woodward’s Ding Dong Merrily on High.

Jesus Reassures His Mother is a setting of medieval lyric poetry written anonymo...(+)
Jesus Reassures His Mother is a setting of medieval lyric poetry written anonymously in the 14th century. The poet recounts a vision of the young Mary rocking the infant Christ to sleep. The child requests hismother to sing a lullaby but alas knowing her child’s fate she is too sad to sing. Jesus tells her that all mothers worry about their children’s futures and insists that she should sing nevertheless. Mary recounts the visit ofGabriel and the events of Christ’s birth but reflects how sad it is to have delivered a child to such a fate. Jesus reassures his mother that he will be with his father in heaven where Mary will come to join Him at the end oftime there to live in eternal bliss. At this point Mary is persuaded by and echoes her child’s reassuring words and she is joined in this by the choir (now representing us all). The vision fades away in the voice of the narratorwhose loneliness and longing return. We learn that it is Christmas Day. This setting grows from the visionary mystical world inhabited by Julian of Norwich whose Revelations of Divine Love provided the inspiration for awork Anne Boyd composed in 1994. The medium has been expanded from the Song Company’s six solo voices used in the Revelations to the double motet choir of the Sydney Philharmonia who commissioned this work for their 75thanniversary. The parts of the infant Jesus Mary the Narrator and the angel Gabriel are taken by choir soloists: soprano alto tenor and bass. The work is situated in the context of Boyd’s personal musical aestheticwhich she describes as the intersection of Christian Love with Buddhist silence.

Vecné evangelium / The Eternal Gospel Cantata for Solo Voices Mixed Chorus and Orchestra Leoš Janácek’s great oratorio “The Eternal Gospel” for soprano tenor mixed chorus and orchestra is based on a medieval legend in which an angel announces the coming of the Kingdom of Love on Earth to a Cistercian monk Joachim of Flora. Janácek set the text as a dramatic scene with two characters. The chorus unfolds as a contrasting foil to the two main figures until the final climax when the people sing “Alleluia” and receive the message of the brotherhood of all creation. The Eternal Gospel occupies aspecial place in Janácek’s œuvre. The dream-like atmosphere and emotional force of this twenty-minute cantata cast an unusually powerful spell. It originated during a time of turmoil: Janácek wrote it in spring 1914 on the eve of the First World War and the première took place in Prague in February 1917. In 1924 Janácek revised the cantata yet again for a festive performance on the occasion of his seventieth birthday. The vocal score has been prepared by Leoš Faltus one of the two editors of the volume for the Janácek Complete Edition (series B/volume 4). - Urtext Janacek Complete Edition - Full score (BA6860) and vocal score (BA6860-90) available for sale - Performance material (BA6860-72) available for hire

Wagner completed the first version of the opera in 1845 during his tenure as Kapellmeister at the royal court of Dresden but he continued to redraft and revise it for the rest of his life. The setting is medieval Germany: the minstrel Tannhauser has fallen into sin with the goddess Venus but after a year in a moment of realisation he demands to leave. He finds himself near his home and is reunited with Elisabeth a girl he once loved. Elisabeth's uncle the landgrave organises a singing competition between Tannhauser and Wolfram who also loves her. Wolfram's song is simple and moving while Tannhauser confused by Venus outrages the audience by singing of profane love.He is banished to Rome on a pilgrimage to seek redemption and Elisabeth follows him with Wolfram. After much searching she gives up and dies just missing Tannhauser who Wolfram discovers creeping back to Venus the Pope having said that it was as impossible for him to be forgiven as for his staff to sprout flowers. Tannhauser sees Elisabeth and casts himself to die by her coffin and the Pope's staff bursts into bloom. This is the Schirmer edition of the Vocal Score edited and translated into English by Natalia MacFarren.

His later works aredistinguished by their concentration on single notes and sounds; in doing this he revolutionised the role of sound in Western music and his oeuvre can be considered a forerunner of modern electroacoustic music. This piece forPercussion Quartet is a 'Ritual March for the Funeral of Achilles'; it is quite short brooding and out-of-kilter. Scelsi uses a combination of group textures and short motifs that draw attention to themselves to create a tenseatmosphere. This folio contains four copies of the Score for ease of rehearsal and performance.

These two anthems are examples of Lauridsen's style in embryo as it were for both were written while the composer was just twenty-seven years old. Both anthems evince the contrapuntal mastery that would prove an enduring featureof the composer's technique. The pure and austere lines of “I will lift up mine eyes ” an a cappella setting of Psalm 121 evoke ancient organum and the imitative devices of Medieval polyphony. Complex chord structuresand elaborate canonic procedures give “O come let us sing unto the Lord” a sense of inexorable forward momentum. The coruscating organ part further enhances the prevailing mood of joy that pervades thisanthem.--Byron Adams

A tour de force of choral energy and expertise in rhythmic precision this is aerial music fleet and vibrant as voices proclaim Martin Luther's vision of universal peace above a torrent of cascading Organ scales. The brightness of the Lydian mode matches this joyful proclamation intoned chant-like in bold clear intervals recalling the sounds both of medieval music and its refraction through the ears of modern masters like Stravinsky and Tavener. Cunningly constructed too on a four-bar ostinato the music reverses its opening scale figure for a quieter section before building again to an extrovert ending that repeats the chant against new Organ figures in aclinching 'alleluia'.
