Whoever pursues piano playing as a hobby mostly focusses on two things: playing from music, with as wide a range of works from classical, pop and jazz music as possible, and playing without the book, i.e. the ability to accompany melodies with chords, play songs by ear and improvise freely. In this volume, both topics are dealt with thoroughly and systematically. Whereas most piano methods prefer either classical or popular music, both kinds of music are well-balanced herein.Clearly structured chapters cover a variety of interesting topics: the Baroque, Classical and Romantic eras, popular piano styles (e.g. ragtime, boogie, rock 'n' roll, pop ballad), the blues and the genres of opera, operetta and ballet.

The title of this piece is taken from the late astronomer and educator Carl Sagan's book Cosmos (1980). Sagan was a great voice in the pursuit of knowledge and reason, an invaluable force in the struggle against ignorance and superstition. His vast historical knowledge and sensitive ear for the poetic also allowed him to adorn his various texts with short quotations from original folklore through history, quotations which I have used as mental and spiritual appetizers, heading some of the movements in this piece. Serenade also reaches out to other inspirational sources, such as William Shakespeare, Joseph Conrad and British science-writer John Gribbin, another great educator and popularizer. The Darwin quotation heading the second movement was also found in Sagan's book Cosmos (it is originally from Charles Darwin: On The Origin Of Species) and so was the quotation about The Backbone of the Night. The Ku-Fu-quotation can be found in Sagan's last great work THE DEMON-HAUNTED WORLD (1995).

For flute, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets (B flat), 2 bassoons, double bassoon or bass tuba, 4 horns (E flat major/B flat) with additional parts for horns in F. When he was a mere 18 years old, Richard Strauss composed the highly Romantic, one-movement Serenade for Wind Instruments, op. 7. Extremely popular among wind players to this day, this work recalls in instrumentation and structure Mozart's “Gran Partitaâ€, which certainly served as a model for Strauss. The serenade was not premiered in its Bavarian homeland as might have been expected, butrather in Dresden, in 1882, under the direction of the then much-esteemed conductor Franz Wüllner, who had also given the inaugural performances of Richard Wagner's Rheingold and Die Walküre and later premiered Strauss' tone poems Till Eulenspiegel and Don Quixote. So it was a great honour for the young Bavarian! Editor Norbert Gertsch presents this little masterwork here for the first time in Urtext quality - in full score and instrumental parts - for which not just the first edition but also the autograph manuscript was scrutinised fastidiously.

This volume from the popular Cellissimo series contains 30 entertaining recital pieces, mostly from the Romantic period. In additionto three original serenades by Jacques Offenbach, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and the French composer Mel Bonis, the volume contains beautiful character pieces, mostly one-movement forms such as berceuse, elegy, humoresque, meditation, melody, nocturne, romance, tarantella, valse de concert and much more . Expressive lyrical pieces are represented as well as cheerful and virtuoso works. In addition to original works, there are numerous arrangements of popular works, including Schumann's Traumerei, Grieg's Anitras Tanz, Fauré's Après un rêve, Elgar's Salut d'amour or Rachmaninoff's Vocalise - all pieces that are well suited as concert and encore pieces . The volume also contains rarities and new discoveries, including original works by cello virtuosos such as Dotzauer, Offenbach, Goltermann, van Goens and Trowell, as well as works by composers Mel Bonis, Juliette Dantin, Ethel Harraden and Claudine Smidt. The level of difficulty is demanding and is aimed at advanced cellists. Many pieces use the 5th-7th position, others have passages in a simple thumb position, sometimes also with high harmonics. They are therefore very good practice examples for advanced users who want to apply sophisticated techniques to beautiful examples of literature. Last but not least, the requirements for expression and design offer plenty of room for cellist and musical development.

Sandra Dackow Little Known Gem - Grade V. Preludium, Andante espressivo, Scherzo, March. Written in a retro, Swedish neo-Classical style, the four-movement Serenade for Strings offers easily hummed tunes presented with grace and good humor. The Preludium offers inner rhythm of nearly consistent sixteenth note figures including written divisi in thirds. Many beautiful lines for cello and viola are found in the Andante Espressivo, which also has a few high passages for violin, reaching high G’s and A’s. The Scherzo is the most technically challenging movement, with quickly shifting tonalities and high, rapid passages that must be kept at the frog and off the string. Finally, the March, reminiscent of toy soldiers or a music box, contains several tricky passages and high notes for the first violins. This charming piece is popular with students!! See #40907 for Sandra Dackow's Expressive Gems edition.

Introductory notes presented in Polish, German, and English. A piece that enjoys great popularity among string orchestras, the Serenade had its premiere on 15 IV 1897 in Berlin. It was played by the Berliner Philharmonisches Orchestra under the direction of H. Urban (then young 21-year-old Mieczyslaw Karlowiczs professor of composition). The piece consists consists of four parts, whose numbers and titles (March, Romance, Waltz, Finale) suggest affinities between Karlowiczs work and works by Mozart, Volkmann, Tchaikovsky and Dvorák then well-known in the music world. The music of the ''Serenade'' is a completely original creation, and in large parts of it allows us to feel Karlowiczs special lyrical expression. (Henryk Pawel Anders).
