Chopin's works for piano and strings were usually made for a specific occasion, and we owe their existence to the repertoire needs of specific individuals. The exception is the Sonata in G minor for cello, the last work by the composer intended for publication, a work reflecting his current style, highly reflective, the result of imagination encroaching into post-romantic areas. Chopin's chamber works belong to the regular concert repertoire. These works were edited by by I. J. Paderewski, L. Bronarski and J. Turczyński. Table of contents: Chopin Fryderyk Grand Duo Concertant for Cello and Piano Chopin Fryderyk Polonaise Brillante Op. 3 for Cello and Piano Chopin Fryderyk Sonata Op. 65 for Cello and Piano Chopin Fryderyk Trio Op. 8 for Violin, Cello and Piano Chopin Fryderyk Variations for Flute

(+)
Pythikos Nomos is scored for alto saxophone (or clarinet in A) and piano. It was at the request of John- Edward Kelly that Brian Elias first decide to write a work for saxophone and piano. ‘Pythikos Nomos’ (Pyhton’s Law)is an ancient Greek musical form invented by Sakadas in 586 BC for the Pythian games to describe the battle between Apollo and the monster on the slopes of Parnassus. It is reputedly the first known genre of programmemusic.Brian Elias decided that the characteristic sounds of the saxophone would be well suited to ancient Greek rhythms and was interested in the implications of this form as an early sonata shape. According to legend Apollofought and defeated the monster on the site which came to be called Delphi. He returned to Delphi in triumph after a period of purification escorted by priests singing hymns of praise. Several versions of the instrumental formexist following the general storyline. Brian chose to base his piece around six sections: (i) Peira (introduction) (ii) Kataleusmos (Apollo incites the monster to battle) (iii) Imabikon (the battle) (iv) Spondeion (hymn ofvictory) (v) Katachoreusis (victory dance) (vi) Syrinxes (the last breaths of the dying monster). The central hymn of victory incorporates a quote from the first Delphic Hym a surviving fragment of ancient Greek music. Thiswork was written for John-Edward Kelly and Bob J.W.Versteegh who gave the first performance on 1st July 1988 at the Wigmore Hall London. Duration c.10 minutes. The score is in C.

(+)
Complete Piano Sonatas I-The Piano Sonatas are regarded as the central works of Alexander Scriabin’s compositional output. No other composer after Beethoven reshaped this genre so radically thereby reinvigorating the tradition of the sonata. Scriabin’s desire not simply to continue the existing tradition but to surpass it is evident as early as his first sonatas. These are exciting works from the pianist’s perspective and in their abundance of expression and wealth of imagination. Up to the third sonata Scriabin developed a distinctive feeling for structural coherence and cyclical unity which at the same time revealed poetic qualities.Thisvolume contains the earlier works; sonatas officially published during the composer’s lifetime as No. 1 op. 6 No. 2 (Sonate-Fantaisie) op. 19 and No. 3 op. 23 as well as the sonatas written during his youth in G-sharp minor (1886) and E-flat minor (1887-89). The edition also includes the virtually unknown fragment of a sonata in C-sharp minor (1887) and the reconstructed parts of a sonata in G-sharp minor (1892) never previously published. The editor Christoph Flamm draws on autograph manuscripts first printed editions and on Russian editions of the 1920s. For the first time the recordings of Sonatas nos. 2 and 3 which Scriabin made in 1908 on paper rolls for the Hupfeld company Leipzig are also taken into account.- Urtext edition reflecting the latest scholarship and taking previously unknown sources into account.- Includes all fragmentary works some published for the first time.- Detailed foreword Ger/Eng) and critical commentary (Eng).

(+)
Transcriber's Note: The poems op.32 were written in 1903. The rst poem remained one of Scriabin's favourite compositions and would appear in most of his piano recitals. The great cellist Gregor Piatigorsky transcribed it for cello and piano a couple of decades later. I owned a copy of the music from age 15 or so but when I eventually decided to learn it I was vexed by the changes Piatigorsky had made to the original score. These include the simpli cation of rhythms dynamics and anything eccentric and typical of Scriabin. During the process of making my own version I soon realised that the middle section did not bene t from beingbroken up into separate lines. While the piano part remains untouched I have borrowed material from the second poem to ll what might otherwise feel like gaps in the cello part (this version can be heard together with pianist Bengt Forsberg on the CD called SmörgÃ¥sbord for the Hyperion label). Interestingly the story around the tempestuous second poem had originally been conceived as an aria for a planned opera. As with Brahms and the opening of the E minor sonata op.38 Scriabin uses the word legato rather than indicating this with slurs (see piano part). - Mats Lidström.Â

Par SAINT-SAENS CAMILLE. The second half of the 19th century represented something of a ?Golden Age? of the violin sonata in France: Influential violin sonatas such as those by Franck, Fauré and Saint-Saëns were among the successful works of this genre, inspiring many further compositions. Saint-Saëns? Violin Sonata No.1 was incorporated into the repertoire of numerous late 19th-century violinists soon after it was written. It was also this sonata which inspired Marcel Proust when he wrote about the fictional sonata by the composer Vinteuil in his novel ?À la recherche du temps perdu?. This performing edition edited by Fabien Guilloux and François de Médicis is based on the musical text from ?Saint-Saëns ? ?uvres instrumentales complètes?, volume III/4 in which Saint-Saëns? lengthy corrections of the Durand first edition as well as the autograph sources have been meticulously evaluated. - With a detailed Foreword (Fr/Eng/Ger) on the genesis and performance history - Performing edition based on the Urtext of the ?Saint-Saëns ? ?uvres instrumentales complètes? - Optimum layout in the violin part and piano score / Date parution : 2022-11-29/ Répertoire / Violon et Piano

Piano Sonata No.5 was written in 1974. Stylistically it moves on from works completed in the 1960s which betray a synthesis of Fi?er's own musical language and the stimuli of New Music. With the exception of the final passage the sonata exclusively applies the mode B flat-B-C-C sharp-F-F sharp-G which was first used in a narrowed six-note form in 1965 in Fifteen Prints after Dürer's Apocalypse. Formally the piece is arranged into short contrasting sections which are created from brief repetitive ostinato motifs. With minimal use of thematic and expressive material the composer achieves effective dramatic abbreviation of the kind whichculminated in works from the 1960s. This musical treatment is abandoned only in the final lyrical part which anticipates the future development of Fiser's musical language leading to its simplification and overall dramatic reduction.Piano Sonata No.5 was first published in 1996 by Bärenreiter Editio Supraphon Prague in a re-print of a transcription provided by the Czech Music Fund in whose preparation the composer was also involved at the time. The new edition consistently adheres to this authorised copy of the work while confining itself to the correction of several apparent omissions and errors.
