As the title suggests, Music for Flute and Electronic Sounds explores the relationships between the flute - lyrical, then percussive; sometimes sustained, other times in sweeping lines - and electronic sounds - sometimes pitched, sometimes more clangorous and bell-like. The individual electronic sounds were designed and built using editors that are now readily available for synthesizers. This made it possible to produce accompanimental sounds that support and blend with the articulation and timbre of the flute in a way that until recently was awkward to accomplish. In addition to the electroacoustic blending, the flute and electronic sounds also share compositional structure, both rhythmic and melodic. There are two musical ideas that are germinal to the pitch and structure of the work. The first is a four-pitch interval set (in two pairs) of descending minor third, intervening ascending major second, and concluding ascending major third. This gesture is presented at the outset. The second idea is a palindromic interval set which appears for the first time in measure 25. Formally, the work is in three parts. Part One is used to introduce several musical characters, most of which are generated from the materials just mentioned. Part Two consists of a juxtaposition of two of these characters. One is jazzy and is generated entirely by the synthesizers while the flute joins the electric sounds in a serene chorale. The flute additionally has the responsibility of interrupting the fast motion of the jazzy character so that the chorale can be heard. Part Three recalls the first part but also includes a cadenza, which uses the serene character of Part Two as basic material. After the cadenza there is a short section that again recalls the beginning. The work closes with a cadenza-like flourish.

Composed by Claude Barthelemy, Okawati's is the first piece from the series Irrawady (also named Asia is running through my ears) for Alto or Soprano Saxophone and electro-acoustic system. Commissioned by a Cultural Centre, this series is made of four parts and two interludes (without Saxophone) and was used as a piece of contest. This particular piece, Okawati's is representing a hotel located in between rice fields in Bali. At night, there is no silence but the noise of frogs and birds flying around. The player is supposed to impersonate one of the birds. Lasting 5'34 minutes, the score of this piece is written in modern writing and requires some good knowledge of modern and contemporary pieces and some very good technical knowledge. Quite unusual and fun to play, it also includes a CD which features the part of the electro-acoustic system. It is followed by: - Interlude I - Ubud - Le dos des caimans - Interlude II - Gazebo.

This volume contains Lilburn's two piano sonatinas. Although the pianists who know the sonatina so well from the inside talk of its subtleties, beauty, delicacy and meaning, it will always be a work of immediate appeal, a work that is as much a delight to listen to as to play, a work that can be enjoyed as pure music.

Score and separate parts with spiral-bound keyboard/organ part. Number 5, 1950 was Mark Rothko's last painting before the breakthrough into his mature format. In it the luminous color fields of a classic Rothko are inscribed across the middle with three delicate lines. Describing this painting and its pivotal position in Rothko's work, Brian O'Doherty observes: 'After this, the lines disappear completely.' In recent years gesture and figuration have disappeared from my music. What used to be background has emerged to become a musical world composed entirely of floating color fields. In this new world I've changed media, moving from the orchestra to smaller combinations of acoustical instruments and electronically-processed sounds. I still think in orchestral terms, but this hybrid medium allows me to create orchestral textures for more practical and readily available ensembles. Initially I imagined this as a kind of monolithic music -an entire piece as one rich and complex sound. Then I came to hear it as homophonic or heterophonic. And now - in this musical world that I thought was completely free of lines - I've come to hear a polyphony of harmonic clouds. Maybe the lines never disappear completely. Contemporary Classical meets Jazz Grooves.Theremin's Journey is quite different. True, there is a piano - which plays bluesy, filmic, generally quite unmemorable music - but add in the theremin and pre-recorded electronics and the listener is off on a bizarre jazz meets sci-fi meets film-pop journey. The high-pitched spooky whine of the theremin is unmistakable, and unforgettable in small doses, as here; the work was in fact commissioned by Joanne Pearce Martin, who plays both theremin and piano. This track actually carries a 'health' warning on the cover: Crackles are part of the electronic track and are intentional: the CD is not defective! As it happens, the crackling is not particularly noticeable, and in general the electronics are atmospheric and additive in combination with the theremin. Especially the first and last two or three minutes of the 'journey' are really quite fascinating musically. Born in 1938, French composer Jean-Claude Risset is best known for his pioneering contributions to electronic music. Composed in 2003, Reprises Alto Saxophone and Electroacoustic Device is no exception to the composer's prolific contributions to the genre. Risset has experimented with a variety of software to recreate and produce sounds and synthesis techniques. Composed for Conservatoire students, a typical performance of Reprises lasts around 3 and a half minutes. The Saxophone demonstrates use of chromaticism, extended techniques and complex rhythms, amongst other features, whilst accompanied by an electronic part, helpfully recorded on a CD.
