Op. 38. Par ELGAR EDWARD. This is the best of me, wrote Edward Elgar after the final measure of his Dream of Gerontius. Premiered in 1900, in Great Britain the work has long been a standard work in the repertoire of large oratorio choirs. Elgar’s moving, poetic setting of the eponymous poem by Cardinal John Henry Newman is about a dying man and his journey beyond death to God. Before the eyes of the listeners, a musical image of the soul is created which flies past mocking demons to God with its protecting angel at its side, is allowed to look at him briefly, then faces the purgatorial fire of salvation confident and comforted. The work is a real rarity in the history of oratorio, and for large choirs it is a thrilling alternative to the established repertoire of Requiem settings. Its popularity is thanks to the suggestive, often sensuous power of the music, the great choral scenes of the demons and the Angel, and the three impressive solo parts. All previous editions were reprints based on the historic first printed materials, which are inconsistent. By contrast, Carus has produced a modern, newly-engraved edition, compatible in all sections, which takes all the sources into consideration and evaluates the autograph manuscript in detail. For this edition the complete orchestral material is available on sale, and the vocal score and full score contain both English and German singing texts. Hymnus was commissioned by the Wilhelmina Easterein Fanfare Orchestra in the Autumn of 1999 for their performance at the World Music Contest Kerkrade. The commission was the result of a collaboration between the composer and the thenmusical director Marten van der Wal. The exact meaning of the word Hymnus is not known but it is taken in this presentation to mean hymn or hymn-like. The melodic material is organic and grows from an initial unison tone. Thisinterval is gradually expanded to form the cell F E C F a semitone third fifth. The only other melodic motif is the ascending three-note pattern spanning a major third. This is the second of his compositions to use this ascending motif theother being Fanfare for a Bright New Age for Brass Band and Organ also of 2000. These characteristic intervals appear in many contrasting moods and guises throughout the piece. The opening unison notes are intended to convey as sense ofpower and magnificence like the first sounds at the dawning of the universe. After the immense power a period of stunned silence and reverence. The evolution of the hymn melody incorporates a variety of moods and atmospheres sometimes expressing much joy and celebration whilst also suggesting periods of intense savagery or prayerful contemplation. The hymn builds as the piece progresses and is finally stated in its complete form at letter W. The official worldpremiere of the work was given by Wilhelmina Easterein at the World Music Contest 2001. Whilst the composer was unable to attend in person he was able to enjoy the premier simultaneously transmitted via a mobile phone from the audience! Conductors Note The tempo indications are to be viewed as a guide rather than a literal instruction. Within the music there is an innate sense of pulse and metre lending itself to considerable rubato. Melody is king and all else is mere support and decoration careful attention must therefore be given to balance.

(ISB) Grade 8 - Trinity-Guildhall /ABRSM Rudolf Tulacek was one of the leading Czech double bassists of his generation and was a respected and influential teacher at the Janacek Academy of Music in Brno. He was born in Jicin Bohemia on 25 August 1885 and began to study the double bass at the age of eleven having already studied flute and violin. So rapid was his progress that he soon became a member of the Jicin Municipal Orchestra and in 1901 entered the Prague Academy of Music to study with Frantisek Cerny one of the Czech capital's leading bassists and teachers. Tulacek graduated in 1907 with the highest commendations from his professors performing the Geissel Concerto at his public graduation concert and in 1909 was offered the post of Solo Bassist in the Zagreb Opera Orchestra. From 1920 he was also a Professor at the Zagreb State Academy of Music and subsequently became Concert-Master of the Zagreb Philharmonic. His many recitals attest to his perfect technique supreme musicality and complete command of the instrument and concerts included music by Cerny Dvorak Geissel Kukla Láska Misek Simandl Stein and Tenaglia alongside his own compositions. In 1937 Tulacek became Professor of Double Bass at the Brno Academy of Music and in 1948 became the first Double Bass Professor at the newly founded

Written five years after the death of the composer the work reflects a powerful wish for an imaginary dialogue with a great creator; Upon learning the sad news coming from Paris in 1955 the plan of the work took shape quite soon but the work on the score itself materialized only in 1960 after a long period of gestation. Homage to Enescu has three parts – Prelude Melopoeia Polyphony – or three attitudes: one of awe striking the composer upon entering a vast world another of contemplation of its abyss and still another of lucidly returning to his work the only one capable of rendering him to his won artistic way. It was written forviolins alone (divided in four groups) whose numbers may be multiplied from 8 to 32. Instrumentally speaking Theodor Grigoriu intends an analysis of the rich color resources of the violin but also an investigation of Enescu’s unique original style of playing. The initial theme combines in the sense of an epiphany a monogram of the letters E.N.E.S.C.U. and two motifs from Octuor (Octet) and Chamber Symphony i.e. piece from youth and another from the end of his career both evoking a very characteristic Enescian Stimmung. Homage to Enric Granados. Par CASABLANCAS BENET. The present work was commissioned by the Foundation for Iberian Music (Graduate Center of the University of New York) as a tribute to Enric Granados on the occasion of the composer's centenary celebration in New York. The general character of the piece, in which the cantabile register dominates, responds faithfully to its title (A Song without Words) and its form refers to a Lied arrangement in three parts. The first of these, in the form of a serene and contemplative introduction, gives way to more lively and agitated central episodes, whose rhythmic vivacity and scherzandi accents coexist with a certain dramatism, and where there is no lack of a passionate and luminous appeal to the name of Granados, in the form of a musical acrostic made up of the notes E-C (Enric) and G-A-D-(e)S (Granados). All this leads to the final part, of a more lyrical nature, which culminates in the concluding Andantino semplice, in the manner of a dreamed popular song and which constitutes the emotional climax of the work, which concludes on ecstatic resonances, until it fades into silence. The premiere of the work took place on 10 March 2016 at Elebash Recital Hall in New York by the Perspectives Ensemble, conducted by Ángel Gil-Ordóñez.
