Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921) is best known for his Carnival of the Animals and Organ Symphony. Yet his Fantasy in E flat major arranged for Cornet or Trumpet and Piano remains popular in the advanced repertoire for the instruments. Saint-Saëns entered the Paris Conservatoire at the mere age of thirteen where he studied Organ and composition. He then went on to have a successful career as an organist and composer writing his Fantasy in E flat major in 1857. The piece was originally composed for the Organ but Henri Busser (1872-1973) recognised the work's significance and arranged it for Cornet orTrumpet with Piano accompaniment. To this day Fantasy in E flat major remains prominent in the advanced brass player's repertoire.

36 Études Transcendantes by Théo Charlier (1868-1944) is a study book for advanced level Trumpet players using a chromatic trumpet in B flat. It can also be used by Cornet or Flugelhorn players. Written with some very technical parts 36 Études Transcendantes prepares the Trumpet players with challenges through all registers while involving some interesting lyrical parts. It is a must have for any advanced Trumpet players and a classic in the Trumpet literature. Théo Charlier was a Belgium Trumpet Master who differentiates himself by preferring the sound of Trumpet to thoseof the Cornet or the Flugelhorn during a period which was more used to military music. He was the first to interpret Bach's 2nd Brandenbourg Concerto in its full in 1898 with a tailor-made piccolo-Trumpet Victor Mahillon. In addition to 36 Études Transcendantes he also composed some contest pieces and some operas.

Written in 1803 by Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778-1837) this Trumpet Concerto in E-flat Major is a classical piece of the Trumpet repertoire. Composed in the spirit of Mozart and initially for the keyed-Trumpet it was re-discovered in 1958 by a Yale student after 150 years of inertia due to the obsolescence of the instrument for which it was made. This edition offers a transposition in E-flat Major (initially in E Major) adapted to the instruments in use today. The other instruments to be involved in this concerto are a Flute two Oboes two Clarinets two Bassoons two Horns Timpani and Strings. Hummel?s Trumpet Concerto begins with an orchestra onlyfirst movement in a sonata theme which is repeated with the inclusion of the soloist. This Allegro Spirito sounds reminiscent of the Haffner Symphony (No. 35 in D Major) by Mozart but distinguished itself by a second theme. The second movement Andante is more melodic with the trumpet which holds long notes. Finally the Rondo offers a blissful and bright end to the Concerto. Former student of Mozart Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778-1837) was a brilliant composer pianist conductor and teacher. Evolving at the same period as Beethoveen he became as famous as him and wrote numerous concertos (for Piano Oboe Trumpet Violin and others) operas and some wind music pieces.

Bohuslav Martinu (1890-1959) was a prolific Czech composer writing many large scale works. The composer moved to Paris in 1923 where he began experimenting in a variety of composition styles. Sonatine for Trumpet and Piano was composed in 1957 and is adaptable to both the B flat and C Trumpet. Martinu himself was a violinist but he liked to experiment and the mid-1950s saw him move to Nice in France where he began writing Sonatas for wind and brass. Sonatine for Trumpet exemplifies the composer's influence of Stravinsky Debussy and jazz music. The piece is excitingly virtuosic in its use of flutter tonguing complex rhythms chromaticism and ensemble between the Trumpet and Piano. As a varied substantial work for the Trumpet repertoire Martinu's Sonatine is essential to the advanced trumpeter.
