Lohengrin stands as a pivotal work in the career of Richard Wagner. In terms of its structure and approach it is usually grouped at the end of his early operas; at the same time it demonstrates many of the ideas and techniques that would achieve full fruition in his later music dramas.The story is set in Antwerp in the tenth century where Elsa sister to the would-be duke Gottfried is accused of his murder. A mysterious figure arrives to defend her and even take her as his bride but he commands her to not inquire about his name or his unknown provenance. A count Telramund and his sorcerer wife Ortrud are Elsa's accusers and in fact the real culprits in Gottfried'sdisappearance. They lay a series of intrigues to convince Elsa to ask her mysterious hero his identity and in so doing bring about a sad ending to the love story but an unexpectedly happy conclusion: the return of Gottfried. The story is set in three acts - the libretto being written of course by Wagner himself and this book contains an English version by Stewart Robb.

With the prelude to the Mastersingers we now publish the second of three Wagner transcriptions already made legendary by Gould's 1973 recording. Gould brought Wagner's 'brilliant counterpoint' to life with the help of recording technology by superimposing a second supplementary part over an initial recording. For live performances it is therefore preferable to have two pianists playing the piece on two pianos rather than the piano solo version which is made possible with some cuts.

De nombreuses révisions et adaptations sont empêtrés dans l'histoire complexe de l'oeuvre 'Tannhäuser'. Après la première mondiale à Dresde en 1845 n'avait pas réussi à être bien reCu par le public, Wagner révisé de grandes parties de l'opéra à plusieurs reprises dans les décennies suivantes. Les changements les plus complètes ont été faites pour la performance Paris en Mars 1861, mais même après qu'il a fait de nouvelles révisions en se substituant certains des changements précédents et ont été effectuées à Vienne en 1875, entre autres.Le score de l'étude est basée sur la version de 1875 qui a été à tort publiés dans le cadre la version de Paris jusqu'à aujourd'hui et a fait pour être dénommée 'la version viennoise. Based on the new edition as part of Wagner's Complete Edition the first critical edition of the score Die Walküre like Rheingold and Götterdämmerung is now also available as large pocket score.The new edition is based on the sources used for the printing i.e. the first print of the score and the engraver's copy. Fortunately the latter still is extant today. At the end of the first Bayreuth Festival in autumn 1876 Wagner gave it to the violinist Friedhold Fleischhauer from Meiningen the first violinist of the Ring orchestra apart from August Wilhelmj. For 125 years the document was privately owned before it was made accessible tothe public for the first time in 1999.
