As a child prodigy, singer (alto), composer and pedagogue (singing master) Francesco Antonio Pistocchi known as ‘Il Pistocchino’ (1659–1726) was acclaimed in numerous theatres in Europe, and his name was praised by musicians and theorists of the time, who included Pier Francesco Tosi, Giuseppe Torelli, Giacomo Antonio Perti, Johann Joachim Quantz, and Charles Burney. His musical oeuvre is rather extensive: it includes operas, a serenata, oratorios, cantatas, duets, terzetti, madrigal, Mass and Mass sections, psalms, responsories, canticles, litanies, hymns, antiphons, motets, lamentations, pastorals and sequences, and instrumental music. Performance Material on Hire[Solo: SSATB - Flautino.bFl.0.2.0.1 - 0.2.0.0 - Lute - Str - Bc]From the beginning of 1703 throughout the whole duration of his residency in Rome (prolonged until the end of 1708, with the exception of the Venetian visit), the composition of oratorios was one of the principal activities of Alessandro Scarlatti, who added to his already noteworthy output with the creation of new masterpieces. Among these Il giardino di rose – the subject of the present critical edition – stands out for its stylistic innovations as well as for its intrinsic musical qualities. Authoritative scholars have indicated for some time that this piece may be considered as one of the best compositions of the Palermitan musician; and recently Saverio Franchi (to whom we owe the first critical edition), as well as pointing to the beauty of the music, its fine expressive qualities, has drawn attention to its modernity, going as far as to consider the oratorio ‘an exemplary work, a model of European stature, to which Handel himself had to measure up in order to create his Resurrection Oratorio. This was performed (in 1708) barely a year after Il giardino di rose in the same place, for the identical occasion, and for the same commissioning patron, the Marchese Francesco Maria Ruspoli.

Performance Material on Hire[Solo: SAATB - Str - Bc]Thanks to its patron the Duke Francesco II, Modena became a capital city worldwide for the oratorio genre: renowned maestro di cappella in Ferrara, also Bassani wished to offer to the Duke his own work, setting aside for him the summit of his melodic and dramaturgical inventiveness.According to the documents that we have, the performance of Giona was Bassani's debut at the court of Francesco II. Born in Padua around 1650, the composer carried out the main part of his activities in Ferrara, where he was organist (probably from 1667), and maestro di cappella at the Accademia della Morte (from 1683), and subsequently also at the Cathedral (from 1686); he also became a member of the Accademia Filarmonica of Bologna (in 1677) and was committed to Alessandro II Pico, Duke of Mirandola and Marquis of Concordia. In 1712 he moved to Bergamo, where he was maestro di cappella at S. Maria Maggiore; he died there on 1st October 1716. Before his commission in Modena, the <> - as he was often called at that time - had already printed seven instrumental and vocal works as well as a few operas and oratorios.

In Sonata 3 in F major the opening Largo is styled as a Siciliana, this species of movement being especially common in the flute repertory on account of the instrument’s pastoral associations. The Spiritoso that follows is a movement both tuneful and energetic. A concluding Presto ramps up the excitement, introducing some piquant harmonies. Sonata 4 is in the shady key of C minor, relatively rare in flute music of the eighteenth century because of intonation difficulties. The opening Arioso is attractively plaintive. The Allegro moderato that follows has some very effective imitative interplay between flute and bass. For the finale, Balicourt writes a soulful Cantabile in minuet style that recalls similar C minor movements in the music of Alessandro Scarlatti and Francesco Geminiani.

L'Orfeo is an opera from 1607, based around the legend of Orpheus and Eurydice. It is often cited as the earliest opera still regularly performed today. The libretto was written by the Italian lawyer anddiplomat Alessandro Striggio (1573-1630), for a carnival in Mantua. The music was composed by the Italian priest Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643), arguably the greatest composer of the Renaissance era, who is bestknown for his madrigals as well as his sacred works such as the Vespers.
The Choruses From L'Orfeo have been edited by the Italian composer, musicologist and editor Gian Francesco Malipiero(1882-1973).
