This Urtext edition takes into account all the sources including the old and the new complete editions whose relationship is clearly explained in a stemma. In several passages the renowned Beethoven specialist Barry Cooper has arrived at variant readings, such as in the â??Sanctusâ?, where the choir enters instead of the soloists, rather than coming in at â??Pleni sunt coeliâ?. No less worthy of mention is the addition of the soloists to the choir in most of the â??Credoâ?. These matters and many other editorial decisions are documented in the detailed Critical Commentary (Eng).
The appendix contains Beethovenâ??s arrangement of the Gregorian chant â??Tantum ergoâ? for the first time. This was composed at the same time as the â??Missa solemnisâ? and most probably stands in a close relation to it.

Hail Gladdening Light was written at the request of Matthew Owens for the choir of Wells Cathedral and was first performed at Candlemas 2006. The composer has long been an admirer of the setting by Charles Wood and so wanted to create a work with a completely different atmosphere particularly focusing on mystical light. The opening and closing sections make use of the Gregorian Chant for Candlemas – a troped setting of the Nunc dimittis. Where these chanted sections occur they should be unconducted and sung with the freedom and tempo of plainsong. The emphasis throughout the whole piece should be on luminosity. This piece isfrom Faber's Choral Signature Series which introduces a wealth of new or recently written choral music to choirs in search of fresh repertoire. the series draws in a rich diversity of living composers and includes both lighter and more challenging contemporary works offering a thrilling array of varied styles.

As a singing teacher choir director and not least as a passionate professional choir singer Irina Rebhuna is perfectly familiar with the possibilities of the human voice. And so it is hardly surprising that the Latvian musician born in 1988 has devoted herself especially to the composition of vocal music. Her sacred choral work Libera me Domine for mixed a cappella choir (SSAATTBB) won the special prize for the 'best composition for 4-6 voices' at the International Composition Competition 'Musica Sacra Nova' 2016. This church music gem in which the eponymous Gregorian chorale is intonated by one of the (two) bass baritone sections at the beginning over a musicaltapestry woven by the remaining voices - and taken up again by all tenors at the end is ideal for ambitious amateur choirs.The idea behind this work says the composer is 'the human reflection on the uncertain on death on Judgment Day or on what is inexplicable to us. Such as humility excitement fear and atonement. The chant ends without ending there is no solution. Life goes on because we ask the following question again and again: What will happen next?'

'Familiar verses from Psalm 84 are given a memorable treatment here by Paul Mealor. Repetition aids the chant-like effect more Taizé than Gregorian chant. Almost 40 compositions half of which written for accompanied and unaccompanied choir can currently be found in the catalogue of works by the young Polish composer Katarzyna Danel (born in 1992). After winning several national composition prizes she was awarded the 1st prize of the 13th International Composition Competition 'Musica Sacra Nova' 2016 for Misericordias Domini for eight-part mixed a cappella choir. The complex sacred a cappella choral work is based on the eponymous Gregorian chorale (Psalm 89:2). This Latin choral piece is characterized by three main structures: by aleatoric sound clouds in major pentatonic scales which are emphasized by sustained organum-like notesfrom the Gregorian chorale melody on the one hand by Renaissance-style polyphony combined with modern harmony on the other hand and finally by long static chords merging in space and harmony. A wonderfully mystical spherical composition which by means of ad libitum passages marked in the musical text even gives the performer the opportunity to interpret the piece individually.

Andrej Makor currently a master student of composition at the Conservatorio Cesare Pollini in Padua has already won numerous international composition prizes. The highly respected works by the artist born in Slovenia in 1987 are performed by renowned choirs ensembles and soloists at prestigious competitions and festivals among others. His composition O Emmanuel for which he was awarded the 2nd prize of the International Composition Competition 'Musica Sacra Nova' 2016 is based on the original Gregorian chant of the last of a total of seven so-called O antiphons which are sung at the seven Advent days with the Magnificat at Vespers in anticipation of Christmas Eve.Makor's score which follows the traditional motet form but is structured in a more modern form begins with the original Gregorian chorale. Its melody runs through various voice groupings in the course of the piece. In the concluding 'Domine Deus noster' whose pressing character becomes obvious in the constantly recurring triplet figurations of the middle parts the work imbued with the idea of eternity reaches its extremely impressive climax.

Full Score. Par BEETHOVEN LUDWIG VAN. Beethoven described his grandly conceived 'Missa solemnis” as 'my greatest work” and sold manuscript copies to some of the subscribers even before it had appeared in print.
This Urtext edition takes into account all the sources including the old and the new complete editions whose relationship is clearly explained in a stemma. In several passages the renowned Beethoven specialist Barry Cooper has arrived at variant readings, such as in the 'Sanctus”, where the choir enters instead of the soloists, rather than coming in at 'Pleni sunt coeli”. No less worthy of mention is the addition of the soloists to the choir in most of the 'Credo”. These matters and many other editorial decisions are documented in the detailed Critical Commentary (Eng).
The appendix contains Beethoven's arrangement of the Gregorian chant 'Tantum ergo” for the first time. This was composed at the same time as the 'Missa solemnis” and most probably stands in a close relation to it.

Par FERRARIO PIETRO. Jubilate Deo was written an June 2002, and dedicated by the composer to his Ensemble vocale Calycanthus. The first world performance took place in Italy at Isola Vicentina – Santuario di S. Maria del Cengio, by the Ensemble vocale Calycanthus, on May 2003, 10th. The piece was unanimously awarded the first prize at the International Trophy of Choral Composition “C. A. Seghizzi” 2004 at Gorizia [Italy], and was performed during the prestigious final of the European Choral Grand Prix 2004 by Ars Cantica Choir. The motet has a great rhythmic vivacity, with rich and colourful harmonies. It has a simple structure A-B-A’. The contrasting central section is more meditative, with manysolos, and echoes from Gregorian chant. This set of three motets for unaccompanied male choir sets the Latin words for the De Profundis Ave Maria and Laudate and manifests Lewkovitch's fascination both with chant and with modality.Contemporary Danish composer conductor and Organist Bernhard Lewkovitch has followed a rare path among modern composers. From 1947 he was Organist at St Ansgars Kirches and later remained connected with the Catholic Church by working as an Organist. Clearly he is inspired by the Catholic liturgy and sees his great output of ecclesiastical music as a vocation and a great responsibility. For many years his work by inspired by Gregorian chant and was composed in church modes then inthe mid 1950’s he began to expand into modern bitonality and polytonality culminating in Il cantico delle creature in 1962/3 in which there was no conventional notation and no fixed pitch. After that Lewkovitch had somewhat of a hiatus later returning again to the inspirations of the mid1950’s.
