From one of the UK's bright, emerging choral composers, Rhiannon Randle, is this sublime setting of the familiar Latin text. O nata lux is a personal reflection on the compelling and timeless choral atmosphere depicted by the famous Thomas Tallis setting of these words. Dedicated to the memory of Randle's late grandmother, the work balances a sense of intimate prayer and meditation with a spiritual declamation of the “light born of light.†To see hope and new life in despair and death - for in the darkness we have seena great light - chimes as much with the season of Advent as it does with personal loss. The lilting homophony of the opening is characterised by light tenuti, intended to provide a sense of gentle ebb and flow, almost as if to accentuate the natural emphases of speech. This then broadens into a polyphonic cascade, which hints at Bruckner as much as paying homage to Tallis's own setting. O nata lux is an exciting addition to the Contemporary Choral Series, suitable for intermediate to advanced choirs looking to support and program new music by outstanding young composers.

With a hauntingly beautiful original text, The Sunrise Will Come is the perfect piece to showcase lyrical delivery and phrasing. The song's minor key paired with the hopeful lyric creates a sense of forward leaning, satisfied at the close of the piece with a Picardy third. Interesting harmony, satisfying (yet accessible) divisi, a gorgeous a cappella section, and a stunning soprano highlight in the final moments of the piece set it apart, making it an excellent choice for an intermediate-advanced group's concert or festival selection.

An a cappella setting of this famous text and tune that incorporates choral improvisation—well, at least the simultaneous random singing of a given part by each singer of the choir—Latin and English texts, with the former sung to an original melody, and the latter set to a 2-voice 4/4 scoring of the chant tune. There's a lot here, and we hope, if this commentary arouses some interest, you'll give it a look.

Austere and noble, the hymn tune THE MORNING TRUMPET is from The Sacred Harp, 1844. The composer has crafted an unusual setting for SATB and Brass Quintet. The voice parts are very accessible for any size choir and always take center stage (for example, the piece begins with unison men a cappella, not the usual choice in a piece with brass quintet). The text looks forward to the time when we transcend death to be with Jesus. Your choir will have fun singing the recurring refrain O shout glory, glory!
