Let us build a house is the closing hymn of Kim André Arnesen’s large-scale work, The Stranger. Instead of a typical majestic endingto a large work, Arnesen went for a quiet one with only an unaccompanied choir. As the composer comments, 'sometimes a message feelsstronger like that and makes us listen more carefully'. The text is from the hymn by Marty Haugen, which concludes 'Let us bring an end to fear and danger: All are welcome in this place.' A stillness and serenity pervades this short piece, suitable for intermediate choirs.

A rousing rendition of the well-known spiritual. There are two versions of this piece, one with piano, SATB choir and no divisi, and one with divisi choir and is a cappella. The piece begins slowly and crescendos into a jubilant exhortation to let your light shine.

A short motet, particularly suitable as an introit, My heart, O God portraits the captivating allure of music and singing, skilfully weaving luscious harmonies and intricate divisi passages within the vocal parts. A reflective setting of the one of the Marian antiphons (Hail, Queen of Heaven) by emerging composer Kerensa Briggs. A continuous, largely homophonic choral texture underpins the work, with rich harmonies and gentle dissonance, and clever seamless joining of phrases. A solo plainchant melody is incorporated over sustain chords, providing contrast in this beautiful setting of the well-known Latin text. A highly effective short motet, suitable for intermediate choirs looking to expand the horizons of their repertoire.

Kyle Johnson has taken the traditional canon “When Jesus Wept†and creatively deconstructed it. We never hear more than two parts in canon with each other at the same time. Then he introduces a new counter-melody in the other parts and fills out the harmonies in other ways. While the words can be lost in the traditional four-part canon, the overall effect of Johnson’s approach is to create a moving meditation on the text. Easily accessible and highly recommended for small SATB choirs, but any size group will appreciate the artistry of this piece.

Constructed almost as a choral recitative and aria, the first section But He Was Pierced is unaccompanied. All We Like Sheep follows, with its jaunty changing meters and a keyboard accompaniment that could be done on piano or organ. These two short pieces were originally written to follow the composer's Surely He Has Borne Our Griefs (50-3105).

Scored for SATB chorus, this work has one instance of soprano divisi at its climax. While approachable for singers, and while its piano part is harmonically supportive, it would be most appropriate for choirs at an upper-intermediate level.

An a cappella polyphonic setting based on the Sanctus chant of Mass XVIII. Though not particularly complex, the extensive divisi requires fairly sizeable forces, and the harmonic texture requires careful attention to intonation. The end result creates a powerfully rich sonority.

An a cappella setting of this famous text and tune that incorporates choral improvisation—well, at least the simultaneous random singing of a given part by each singer of the choir—Latin and English texts, with the former sung to an original melody, and the latter set to a 2-voice 4/4 scoring of the chant tune. There's a lot here, and we hope, if this commentary arouses some interest, you'll give it a look.

While the tune is based on a traditional Czech carol, this is one of Rory Cooney’s most powerful original texts. The piece would make a stunning Communion meditation, evoking images of joy at the infant Savior’s birth, while foreshadowing his sacrifice so that we might eat of the Living Bread. The piano provides support for the choral parts, but the piece may be sung a cappella, or, if circumstances allow, the use of the optional string quartet will add to the warmth expressed in the words and harmony of the singers. String Quartet or Keyboard accompaniment.
