These saxophone quartets are available together with a play-along CD, offering every musician of the quartet the possibility of working on his part at home---in addition to quartet rehearsals. The written parts do not include the phrasings of the improvisations on the CD, which is meant to induce the students to imitate those phrasings. Imitation is an essential step on the students' way to learning how to phrase in jazz. These solos are by no means obligatory. The notated chords serve as a basis for those who wish to improvise and create their own solos.

These three choral preludes have been taken from Bach's Organ Booklet. In the first chorale, the principal voice is assigned to the alto saxophone. In the third chorale, it is the tenor saxophone performing the expressive sixteenth-note lines that plays the more prominent part. Noels (the French spelling) are old but enduring carols that often tell a ballad-like story. Nowells (English spelling) are likely derived from and developed by English wandering minstrels. Both carols and nowells are often in 3/4 meter, lending themselveswell to dance. The First Nowell is one of a few carols that survived a ban on Christmas by the English Parliament in 1645. The tune is one of the oldest ballad carols, perhaps dating back to 1500, and likely originating in England. This arrangement of The First Nowell has multiple settings of the 3/4 time melody.

This arrangement for saxophone quartet (SATBar)---rather than favoring a soprano solo with accompaniment---strives to include all the players in the music making, particularly by distributing melodic material throughout the ensemble. In addition, all dynamics and articulations should be taken as suggestions only, as performers are encouraged to make their own interpretations.

Chopin und die Mazurka gehören unweigerlich zusammen. Der Komponist liebte diesen volkstümlichen Tanz seiner polnischen Heimat, in der er die ersten 20 Jahre seines Lebens zubrachte und widmete sich dieser musikalischen Gattung sein ganzes Leben lang. Opus 68 besteht aus vier Mazurken, die zwischen 1830 und 1846 entstanden sind und 1855 posthum veröffentlicht wurden. Auch in ihnen finden sich die typischen Kennzeichen wie schneller 34-Takt, Akzente auf schwachen Taktteilen, Triolen, punktierte Rhythmen und weite melodische Sprünge. Während die erste der beiden ausgewählten Mazurken deutlich an einen Volkstanz angelehnt ist, wirkt op. 68 Nr. 3 etwas nachdenklicher und raffinierter. Der B-Teil mit der lydischen Solomelodie und dem sie begleitenden Quint-Ostinato, welches ihr auch vier Takte lang vorangestellt ist, trägt allerdings wiederum volksmusikalische Züge.
