This short work is partly based on the well-known bassoon solo from Peter and the Wolf, the musical fairy tale by Sergei Prokofiev. However, the original melody is presented in â??inversionâ??: ascending intervals become descending ones, and vice versa. The middle cantabile section is mainly situated in the higher bassoon register, thus forming a lovely contrast with the other parts. The piano accompaniment is modest and transparent, so that the bassoon is not drowned out.Dit korte werkje is deels geënt op de bekende fagotsolo uit Peter en de Wolf, het muzikale sprookje van Sergei Prokofjev. De oorspronkelijke melodie wordt echter in â??omkeringâ?? gepresenteerd: stijgende toonafstanden worden dus dalende en vice versa. Het middendeel is zangeriger en ligt vooral in het hogere register van de fagot, wat een fraai contrast vormt met de hoekdelen. De pianobegeleiding is bescheiden en transparant, zodat de fagot niet overstemd wordt.Dieses kurze Werk basiert zum Teil auf dem bekannten Fagott-Solo aus Sergei Prokofjews musikalischem Märchen Peter und der Wolf. Die ursprüngliche Melodie wird jedoch als Umkehrungâ?? vorgestellt: aufsteigende Intervalle werden zu absteigenden und umgekehrt. Internationally acclaimed French composer Henri Dutilleux (1916-2013) followed the music traditions of Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy yet implemented his own, distinctive style. His Sarabande et Cortege for Bassoon and Piano displays influences of Debussy's eschewing of tonality and Ravel's inventive textures. These, combined with Dutilleux's unique uses of structure and pedal points create a truly riveting piece for bassoon and piano. Sarabande et Cortege comes at the beginning of Dutilleux's career and was composed as part of a set of four exam pieces for the Paris Conservatoire (1942-1950). Yet the popularity of all four pieces remains, and they continue to be performed to this day. Elements like lyrical melodies and furious semiquaver passages make for an exciting piece for bassoonists.

The chiaroscuro-technique developed by painters of the Italian renaissance served to intensify contrasts and effects of optical depth. In Klar/Obskur, I tried to transfer the general idea of this technique on the rather unusual instrumentation of two double-reed woodwinds and piano. On the one hand, a clear, well articulated playing is characteristic for these instruments, on the other hand, they have an often underestimated potential of 'twilight': air-sounds and fragile, shady colours have a especially attractive when being produced by double-reed instruments (which are often, and superficially regarded as being less capable of differentiated sounds than flute or clarinet). The piano, too, has a broad bandwidth of possibilities between percussive and delicate playing to complement the woodwinds which, in return, can absorb and continue the fading piano sounds.The beginning introduces the two contrasting elements that form the basic material for the piece: a clear, sharp chord, followed by fragile, dim sounds. The changes between these elements as well as their combination and amalgamation produce an enormous spectrum of colours and gesture. After this 'motto-like' opening follow four quite clearly separated short sections, each of them being characterised by a well-defined texture: a partly almost imperceptible air-sound passage, a short sequence of microintervallic notes, a burst of virtuosity and a recourse to the fragile sounds of the beginning.The second, longer main part consists of three sections merging subtly into each other: a short unisono-passage, marked elastic [federnd], is being dissolved into its basic elements; from these remainders, a confrontation of low, 'arcane' bassoon and piano sounds and a strongly ornamented melodic line of the oboe emerges, leading to a short but powerful climax. The piece is concluded by an extended, relaxed epilogue, containing a short piano solo and a duet of oboe and bassoon and, finally, a quotation of the 'elastic' character of the middle section.Benjamin Schweitzer.

“André Jolivet (1905-1974) established his love for composition from a young age. This remained throughout his life, and he held the post of Professor of Composition from 1966-1970 at Paris Conservatoire. Concerto for Bassoon was composed in 1954, and remains highly regarded. Jolivet, himself a cellist, wished to explore composition for all instruments, and therefore has a considerable number of works in all fields. The composer's style is also known for its spirituality, and the desire to associate the everyday with the magical, and the human with the universal. Jolivet draws on acoustics and atonality, as heard in his Concerto for Bassoon. The piece requires high, virtuosic skills due to its expansive use of extended techniques. For all advanced bassoonists, Jolivet provides an exciting, alternative piece for the instrument's repertoire.â€.

Trio Pour Hautbois, Basson, et Piano (Trio for Oboe, Bassoon, and Piano), FP 43, was composed by Francis Poulenc (1899-1963) between 1924 and 1926, and it is his first major chamber work. A slow writer, the young Poulenc eventually sequestered himself away from family and friends in a hotel in Cannes so that he could finish the work, although he was happy to entertain a visiting Igor Stravinsky who offered some advice (quelques bons conseils) that Poulenc then applied to the first movement. The Trio is dedicated to Manuel de Falla, and the delighted Spanish composer saw to the premiere, which took place at the Salle des Agriculteurs in Paris on May 2, 1926, Poulenc at the piano. It was well received at the premiere, has been recorded many times since, and has remained a regular part of the woodwind ensemble repertoire. Reprint edition.
