Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho's Bosun's Cheer composed in 2014. Included here are the score and parts for the Period Instrument Version arranged for a speaker Violin Cello andDouble Bass. Born in Helsinki and having studied composition there and in Freiburg and Paris Kaija Saariaho has achieved a great level of critical and audience acclaim now mid-career. Her previouswork was notable for including electronics alongside more traditional instruments before going on to compose much larger works including the epic opera 'L'Amour de Loin' in 2000 a recording of which won the 2011 Grammy award forbest opera recording.  This piece Bosun's Cheer is an exhilarating work including some inventive instrumental techniques as well as a hauntingly poeticvoice. The story of the suppression of his Violin Concerto by well-meaning friends is relatively well-known. Few, however, know that the version of the Cello Concerto that is routinely heard today is so far from Schumann?s original conception of the work ? not only in details of phrasing and articulation, but also featuring a different ending with a bold final flourish from the cello. Composed in a burst of inspiration in two weeks in October 1850 shortly after he and Clara had moved to Düsseldorf, Schumann (who in 1850 was still in good health) never heard the piece performed. In an effort to promote a performance of the work, he gave the score to the cellist Robert Emil Bockmühl. Bockmühl made revisions that Schumann resisted, and the hoped-for performance never happened. Schumann?s health failed and he died aged just 46 in 1856. The Concerto, in an already substantially revised form, was premiered in 1860 but it was not given significant recognition until it was championed by Pablo Casals in the 20th century by which time (and since) the text for the work had accreted additions and alterations from generations of soloists. Now Josephine Knight, Piatti Professor of Cello at the Royal Academy of Music, London has returned to the original 1850 manuscript of the work, which is in the Biblioteka Jagiello?ska in Kraków, to reveal Schumann?s original thoughts for the first time in a modern Urtext edition. The edition reflects Schumann?s original conception of the work as a Concertstück and restores Schumann?s musical text, free of posthumous interventions. I found that incorporating the changes enabled the piece to take on a completely different character ? one that is lighter and happier, even ?cheerful?, as Schumann himself described the work.?

As part of the 2020-2023 syllabus, ABRSM is introducing a new Initial Grade exam for Violin, Viola, Cello and Double Bass with first exams taking place from 1 January 2020. The Initial Grade is a pre-Grade 1 assessment, following the same structure, content and assessment criteria as ABRSM?s existing graded music exams (three pieces, scales, sight-reading and aural tests). It?s designed to allow learners at the earliest stages of their musical journeys to celebrate their achievement, and is an ideal qualification for those who want a mark as well as helpful feedback. The Cello Exam Pack for Initial Grade contains nine pieces (three per list) from the syllabus, the scales requirements and sample sight-reading tests. Audio recordings of the nine pieces in each book are included with the pack and will be available via a download and streaming code. String Tunes was compiled from melodies Samuel Applebaum used to teach his string students. Michael Katz has produced the accompaniment CD (in traditional jazz and rock styles) to motivate students to practice and perform for friends and family. The melodies are arranged in progressive order from the first three notes students learn to hte end of level one in most method books. These well-known (and some not-as-well-known) melodies may be played as a solo or in unison with other string instruments (violin viola cello bass). The Black Waters for String Trio was composed by Peter Bruun in 2012.
