The songs come from a collection for voice and piano by Clair Fairchild in his Twelve Persian Folk Songs published by Novello and Company, London, 1904. Fairchild's goal was to capture the spirit and ambiance of Persia's music and musicians. Fairchild took special care to preserve their authenticity by limiting western harmony. Such is also the case in this setting for concert band. Special attention should be given to replicate songlike phrasing of the melodic lines and the rhythmic integrity and style of the accompaniment. Conductors are encouraged to take liberties with dynamics and articulations to help performers play expressively. There are many inflections that exist beyond what is printed on the page. For example, the reeds might subtly shape the rhythmic accompaniment in m. 6-7, as might the trumpets with the melody in m. 18. In. m. 23, the wind musicians other than the trumpets are a part of the rhythm section with the percussion. These rhythms should fit together nicely to create a steady cadence. The melodic statements beginning at m. 35 should be carefully balanced to speak evenly throughout the various voices. If an oboist is not available, the solo in m. 57 has been cued in the alto saxophone.

Already a popular recital work for piccolo and piano, and winner of the 2009 International Piccolo Symposium biennial composition competition, Flash! is now available for solo piccolo with band accompaniment - fresh from the NFA premiere, featuring piccolo legend Walfrid Kujala. The East Coast premiere is scheduled for 11/18/10, featuring Boston Symphony piccoloist Linda Toote with the Boston University wind ensemble.
By 2008, Sonatine de Giverny was being performed so frequently that I decided to write another piccolo piece as soon as an opportunity arose. Since Giverny is a study in French style, I knew the new piece must be in my own authentic American voice. That summer, Giverny was performed six times at the NFA convention as a mandatory competition piece, and I returned from the August 2008 convention all charged up to write something different for piccolo. In September, Kate Prestia-Schaub wrote to tell me about the International Piccolo Symposium's new composer competition. She proposed that if I write a new piccolo/piano piece, she would record a demo for me to submit to the competition, and she would submit applications to perform it at the 2009 IPS convention and NFA convention. What amazing timing! I set out to compose a flashy showpiece with a jazzy snap, lots of idiomatic scales and arpeggios, and a scary middle section, and by mid-October FLASH! was complete. Kate followed suit and all 3 wishes came true - FLASH! won first prize in the IPS composer competition, and she performed it both there and at NFA. In the meantime many other piccoloists have added the work to their repertoire, Cynthia Ellis wrote an article about it for Flute Talk magazine, and Walfrid Kujala commissioned a band accompaniment to premiere at NFA in 2010. More recently, Sarah Jackson has commissioned an orchestra version, premiered at the 2014 NFA convention.

The Gift To Be Simple was commissioned by the North Bethesda (Maryland) Middle School Band, where Monica Hepburn is the director. Monica is a former student and graciously asked me to write this for her band. I aimed to take this traditional Shaker song and add modern harmonies, rhythms, and instrumentation.With that in mind, the introduction is similar to the lyrical setting of the original. Measure 5 creates a lively rhythmic motive for the ensemble where the members should match note lengths and style. Be sure that the clarinet and saxophone are the predominant motives at m. 18 so the melody can be fully realized. At mm. 26 and 38, be sure that the rhythmic accompaniment does not overpower the melody and that they adhere to all articulations. Finally, the marking forte-piano followed by a crescendo at m. 53 is critical for the final musical push to the end of the piece.I hope you and your ensemble enjoy performing The Gift To Be Simple.
