This little tribute to William Ferris and the William Ferris Chorale consists of two sections the first slow and the second quick. The text is simply the two words of the title the Amen being the first section and (with minimal overlap) the Alleluia the second. In each part the relevant word is gradually built up from its component syllables or sounds and the second section is a gradual progress from a quiet light texture to a blazing final cadence. Commissioned by the William Ferris Chorale for their 20th Anniversary Season and first performed by them on 27 March 1992 at Mount Carmel Church Chicago Illinois conducted by William Ferris.

Facades was originally written in 1981 to accompany a scene in the cult film 'Koyaanishqatsi'. The scene of New York’s Wall Street on a Sunday morning was eventually cut from the film but the title stillrefers to the facades of buildings on Wall Street. American composer Philip Glass (b. 1937) is widely known as one of the most celebrated influential and prolific of the modern composers. He is frequently referredto as a minimalist though he prefers to call himself a composer of ‘music with repetitive structures.’ Facades later became movement no. 5 of Glassworks Glass’ ground-breaking studioalbum that has come to define his style. It was arranged for Flute and Piano by the composer in 2006.

Using winter as a spiritual metaphor, the text takes us from despair to hope, reminding us of the true heart of Christmas. The music, almost minimalistic in nature, floats like snow above a crystal piano accompaniment. Slowly but with great elegance, the material develops and expands, the winsome text swirling around us until finally finding rest in the promise of God's renewing love and the deep resonance of the final chords. Kevin Volans' String Quartet No. 9: Shiva Dances was commissioned by BBC Radio 3 and first performed by the Smith Quartet at the 2004 Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival.Kevin Volans (the composer) notes on the piece:In the past I have been interested in trying to go beyond historicism (1970s) beyond style(1980s) and beyond form (1990s) in my work. Looking back over the music of the twentiethcentury I was struck by the fact the nearlyall of it is extremely 'busy' almost cluttered. Italmost seemed that composers felt compelled to look industrious. In the new millennium Ithought it would be interesting to try and eliminate content. I also aspired to movingfrommusic (sound as art) to art (art as sound). This of course has already been done by a numberof composers (many from New York Phil Niblock and La Monte Young to name but two) butit was something I had never tried.AlthoughI found it annoying that the label 'minimalist' was given to my African-based work and fearing this would make the label stick I set out to write a piece which reflected my loveof minimal painting and architecture. The Japanesehave a term 'wabi' meaning 'voluntarypoverty' or 'emptiness' to describe their restrained minimal aesthetic an aesthetic which however pays greatest attention to the quality of material and fine detail. I like to think thatthelack of excessive pitch material in this piece reflects a kind of voluntary poverty.When Shiva is portrayed dancing (as Nataraj) He is depicted in a circle of flames crushing asmall figure the ego underfoot.You get theimpression He dances on the spot not movingaround at all. Hans Abrahamsen's Concerto For Piano And Orchestra was composed in 1999 by commission for the BIT-20 Ensemble. A complex and multi-layered work opening with highly minimal material and very slowly building to an ecstatic frenzy across the four movements. As the piece progresses Abrahamsen has also included some significant nods towards composers Gyorgy Ligeti (a former teacher of the composer) and Gustav Mahler.The work was premiered at the Ultima Festival in Oslo in 2000 with Anne Marie Abildskov as soloist. It literally comes to a halt!???There is no programmatic structure behind the four-movement course of the concerto but a romantically minded listener may be tempted to interpret the development from a quick stalling of the familiar through the introduction (by the lyrical second movement) of something much more ???innocent and simple??? as it says - something feminine one feels like adding - to the third movement???s flashing firework display of a scherzo which draws the curtain aside for a liberating rush of joy as life after the advent of love. However the undersigned assumes full responsibility for this interpretation.The piano soloist is the undisputed main character in the concerto and plays almost constantly in the first three movements. It is only in the fourth movement that she takes a break and listens. ???The piano stirs up an anthill??? is Hans Abrahamsen???s own description ???and it becomes almost operatic!
