Antony Herschel Hill's Ave Verum Corpus for unaccompanied SATB is one of a number of liturgical works by this gifted composer. Written for Prebendary John Pearce and the choir of St Simon Zelotes, Chelsea, London, Hill's setting projects the awe and mystery of the text through a rich variety of harmony that particularly exploits the lower registers of the individual voices to great effect. If you have a really good choir, take advantage of this and buy it. For pure musicianship little else has equalled it recently; the sense of architecture is superb, the climaxes are clean, controlled and never contrived, and the final section, 'miserere mei', uses a wonderfully restrained sense of chromaticism. What a magic piece.

(Lothar Graap).

Mozart composed Ave verum corpus in 1791. It is a motet setting of a Latin hymn for small orchestra and chorus. It's style is very simple and non-dramatic unlike the Requiem which he was to begin composing soon after. Ed Hayes has transposed the work into B-flat from the original key of D for 8 Trombones with this gorgeous arrangement.

The Ave verum directs our gaze towards Christ crucified on the cross for us in the form of a prayer of adoration. In this setting, a sound pulsates at first which can be described as gently shining. A syncopated motif introduces an interruption with the note c sharp which gradually allows the tension to increase. The phrase cujus latus perforatum [from whose pierced side] is penetrated by the cry of a solo soprano. The choir breaks off abruptly. The world holds its breath. Whilst the pulsating sonority has an increasingly inexorable character up to this point, from now onwards it appears in the light of an unending confidence and affectionate prayer of adoration. The concluding modal sequences of sounds intensify the impression of devotion and peace.
