Composer's Notes When I met Kelsey Rose in Oxford in St. Stephen’s House chapel over the summer of 2017, we had both just attended a very moving candlelit concert by Westminster Williamson Voices, featuring my setting of “Tenebrae lumini.†I was delighted to be asked to write a piece for compline in Princeton University Chapel, celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Anglican/Episcopal chaplaincy at Princeton University. “Aurora†is the result of that meeting. Composing by commission often throws up some interesting challenges. The piece had to fit both as an accompanying piece to the plainchant of compline, whilst simultaneously being a celebratory anthem. I was instantly drawn back to the poetry and hymns of St. Ambrose of Milan, particularly “Aurora iam spargit polum.†Fragments of chant (both real and imagined) are used to create the powerful imagery of the descending golden light of dawn. The piece reaches its climax with the plea for the despair of night to “vanish,†which it then does, leaving the sopranos alone on a high G.

London Town was commissioned and written to be performed by the combined forces of unison children's choir and SATB mixed voices, with piano. The vividly communicative six-movement work, which is accompanied throughout, is full of musical contrasts from the jaunty 'London Zoo' to the solemn 'Lines written in the Tower of London'. The work celebrates London through its six songs and contains texts by Rudyard Kipling, Walter Raleigh, and William Wordsworth alongside new material by Delphine Chalmers and the composer. It has sections for adult voices alone and sections for children's voices alone alongside passages for the two forces to combine as a full choir.

The great violinist Yehudi Menuhin commissioned Bartok for a new work, and Bartok responded with the Sonate. When first Menuhin saw the work, he deemed it unplayable! Upon further inspection, the composition began to make sense, and Menuhin would ultimately hail it as the most important composition for violin alone since Bach. Similarly, Dejour - captivated by the Sonate - would have grave doubts about transcribing such a virtuosic masterpiece for violin for his own instrument, the guitar. He, too, came to realize that the Sonate could well transfer to the guitar, with its chord progressions, contrapuntal motion, and more. While still demanding of virtuosity, the Sonate is now available as a masterpiece for guitar.

The composition of this sonata spans the period of my undergraduate studies at Durham University. In the first movement, an overall A minor feel is challenged by the near-atonal way in which the main gesture is developed; and by the intermittently chromatic, pentatonic and whole-tone scalic material which emerges in the piano accompaniment. In the coda [from bar 100] obsessive repetition of chords and single notes threatens to take over, until the tension is resolved onto bare E's (the note with which the movement began). Part of this movement was written in Siena on a summer holiday with my parents; the vivid presence of the Tuscan cicadas is echoed in the flute's fluttertonguing. The Passacaglia second movement can also be performed as a standalone piece. Shades of Bartok's 'night music' style are evident in the central section, where after a short flute cadenza the soloist flutters and mutters above limpid piano arpeggios. In the outer sections, a calm flute melody appears above the block chords of the piano's passacaglia cycle. In contrast to the heat of Italy, this movement was inspired by the image of an icy river connecting different wintry landscapes of cold light snow. A scherzo finale rounds off the sonata, dominated by trills emerging from a theme which rhythmically reconfigures the main gesture from the opening movement. In the central Trio [bars 39-49] the melody from the second movement is recalled to bind everything together. As with the first movement, the coda [from bar 99] develops its own repetitive momentum.
