The Hida High School is in a highland city called Takayama in Gifu Prefecture. Takayama City has some of the highest mountains in Japan, atmospheric rows of houses and streets, and a beautiful landscape. The magnificent views from these mountains can be described as a paradise above the clouds. When the composer visited there in the summer of 2001, the lovely flowers spreading through the valley and the refreshing air welcomed him. The flowers looked as if they were fashionably dressed and fully enjoying conversation and a short summer at a reunion party. The composer was inspired by this scenery to compose this piece. The musical party opens with happy greetings of a reunion andjoyful themes follow one after another. A light xylophone solo, a waltz and an adagio featuring alternate solos by alto saxophone, euphonium and trumpet lead to a brilliant finale featuring brass and percussion played in irregular time. A beautiful musical picture that your band will enjoy performing for many years.

The same material is repeated in constantly varying configurations: no two bars have simultaneously the same number of instruments, direction of and number of discontinuities in the glissandi, number of crossings through the octave or unison between instruments. this last is the most important characteristic of the piece. many such crossing points are also punctuated by other instruments but with only, at best, approximate precision: simultaneity, pitch, dynamic, timbre and articulation are alle deviant to varying degrees. asidled. the context itself is fluctuating, only indirectly objective, everything relative. Samba Time delivers something wonderful for the youngest of students. Composer James Meredith has found a way to use very limited technical demands to teach the style of a Samba. If students are engaged as beginners and enjoy what they do, they will be inspired to continue on their instruments. This piece will do just that and will be fun for them and their parents at their very first concert.

Dating back to the 13th century, the clock tower was located in the center of a town and used by townspeople to hear the time through bells and chimes ringing out. There are clock towers all over the world and they are wonderful landmarks to towns and communities. This work begins and ends with the Westminster Chimes theme, which is used by many clocks and clock towers, including Big Ben, the famous clock tower in London. Clock Tower contains many essential musical and technical skills for a beginning level band piece. The tick of the clock mechanism is imitated by pitched woodblocks, and the main theme is based on ascending and descending scale patterns, reinforcing note-reading ability for the beginning student. There are layers of new countermelodies and contrasting sections with dynamics and legato passages, giving the students an opportunity to play in different musical styles. There is a low brass and woodwind feature and a section introducing eighth notes to the upper winds. The sound between the woodwinds and the brass are also important, but many woodwind passages are cued in the brass in case a beginning band might need extra players to help with the balance and blend. This gives the director the opportunity to experiment with these cues and add a few other instruments when needed.Dating back to the 13th century, the clock tower was located in the center of a town and used by townspeople to hear the time through bells and chimes ringing out. Dance of the Crows was composed with the image of Renaissance-style dances in mind. In addition, some Danse Macabre concept started to form in my mind. I could see this melody as a part of some larger narrative in which a character attends a dance, and everything is beautiful and in sync. But when the character starts to look closer, things aren't what they seem. The dancers are actually animalistic hybrids, and the decorations are mockeries of life rather than celebrations of life. The food is inedible, and the shadows seem to have eyes. And that's why, though the melody is simple and largely on the beat, it elicits an uncomfortable and offbeat feeling.Performance Notes:The melody should have a calm almost restrained feeling until m. 17 when things should take a slightly more aggressive turn. Be sure to bring out the dynamics during the percussion break at m. 29 and the outro at m. 41. Feel free to use as many shaker-like instruments as desired in the Percussion 2 part. Use the largest possible tom-tom for the Percussion 3 part. Be sure to have the bass drum player mute all staccato notes with the hand.
