The song Bist du bei mir, geh' ich mit Freuden zum Sterben und zu meiner Ruh' (BWV 508) was composed by Johann Sebastian Bach for his second wife Anna Magdalena (1701-1760), who he married in 1721. The unparalleled popularity of this song is probably due to the magnificent, sensitive melody that wonderfully fits the anonymous text, in which a loved one is told that even death is beautiful as long as you are there with me. Jacob de Haan has produced this beautiful arrangement for brass band, which is suitable for many occasions. Personent Hodie is a medieval Christmas carol from the larger work Piae Cantiones—a published collection of songs intended for cathedral schools in 16th century Finland. The original tune uses modality and plainchant to evoke the mysterious character of Christmastide. This rhythmic setting of Personent Hodie expresses the tune in compound meter, resulting in a joyful energy. The optional hand drum and finger cymbals complement the melody with an exciting, dance-like pulse.“Ideo, gloria in excelsis Deo!â€Therefore, glory be in the highest to God!Ideas for study and reflection: How might word stress be used to enhance overall musicality? What syllables should be stressed vs. unstressed? What dynamic markings are indicted in the score, and where do they occur? Listen to a recording of the original “Personent Hodie†written in 4/4 time. How are the two settings different? .

Adaptation of the motet Tristis est anima mea, attributed to Johann Kuhnau. The motet Der Gerechte kommt um comes down to us as part of the Passion cantata Ein Lammlein geht und tragt die Schuld by Carl Heinrich Graun, into which movements by various other composers, including Bach and Telemann, were also later inserted. According to the research of Diethard Hellmann, editor of this edition, the motet was originally an a cappella composition by Johann Kuhnau with the text Tristis est anima mea, which then was adapted - most likely by Bach - with a new text and the addition of instrumental parts. On the score of his cantata JAUCHZET GOTT IN ALLEN LANDEN (EXULT IN GOD IN EVERY LAND), BWV 51, J.S. Bach (1685-1750) wrote For the 15th Sunday after Trinity and at any time, indicating that he had composed it for any joyous occasion. It is his only religious cantata scored for solo soprano and trumpet. The first performance took place on September 17, 1730 in Leipzig. Gottfried Reiche, Bach's principal trumpeter, would likely have played the virtuoso trumpet part. As traditional culture in Leipzig generally eschewed female voices at the time, the vocal solo might have been sung by a boy soprano. This edition by Wilhelm Rust was created in 1863 as part of the Bach-Gesellschaft Ausgabe (Bach Society Edition). The continuo part was realized by Max Seiffert. Instrumentation: Solo Tpt: Str (2-2-2-1-1 in set): Hpchd: Solo Soprano. Reprint edition.
