Unusually for him Davies starts his Bassoon Concerto not with slow music but with speed and brilliance: the opening is a Presto initiated by the strings and only at the entry of the soloist does the tempo relax to thatof a real introduction. Out of this grow a big dancing Allegro. The slow movement begins and ends with a simple song around fantastical ornamentation from the soloist. The finale is again a recitative and dance with a slow coda.The whole work is an immense show of stamina poetry and athleticism for the bassoon set against an orchestra coloured by low wind (alto flute clarinet in A bass clarinet contrabassoon horns).

Reduction for Bassoon and Piano.'The program notes for Diversions are contained in the descriptive titles of the movements: I.Recitatives and Preludes; II. Serenades and Airs: III. Rags and Waltzes: IV. Ballads and Lovenotes; V. Quicksteps and Trios. The virtuosic demands on the soloist are tantamount to those of a concerto. Because of the nature andtexture of the movements I prefer the less formalistic title Diversions. Commissioned by Odense Symphony Orchestra on the occasion of Carl Nielsen’s 150 years birthday. 1st performance: October 30 2015 by Morten Østergaard (Bassoon) and Odense Symphony Orchestra conducted by Eva Ollikainen in the Carl Nielsen Hall Odense Koncerthus.

The Bohuslav Martinu Complete Edition III/1/5. Par MARTINU BOHUSLAV. “Incarnation” (1956), Bohuslav Martinu’s fourth piano concerto, follows an atypical two-movement structure. It was composed for Martinu’s friend Rudolf Firkušný, who played from a copy of the autograph until 1970, when the composition was first put into print. The next work, “Concerto in B flat major for Piano and Orchestra”, known under the name “Fantasia Concertante”, was to be Martinu’s very last concert work. The concerto in three movements, composed at the request of Swiss pianist Margrit Weber, is quite different from the previous work in terms of its compositional means. In this case, Martinu strongly influenced the edition of the work. The present volume of the Complete Edition of works by Bohuslav Martinu is based mainly on contemporary copies containing the composer’s own modifications.
