In 2014, Chanticleer commissioned me to make a new arrangement of the Hungarian-Romani folk song Jarba, Mare Jarba for their 2014 touring program. Passed down orally through the Romani communities, this beautiful folk song, with text in a language called Beas (beh-osh), speaks of a deep longing to visit one's homeland, a place where the singer can never return. Chanticleer consists of twelve men whose vocal ranges span from low bass to high soprano, equivalent to the range of a mixed choir of women and men. I composed slow sections of original material to represent the singers' longing to return home; these are interspersed with the folk song's traditional fast sections. The incorporated shouts and calls in the score are typically found in the performance of Central European folk songs. I hope you enjoy singing this new version of Jarba, Mare Jarba that contains all of the vigor and excitement of the Chanticleer version. PERFORMANCE NOTES All spoken sounds (indicated by x noteheads) should be performed by individuals. Feel free to elaborate with more sounds of your own in the tradition of Eastern European folk music. If the piece is memorized, feel free to experiment with clapping on the off-beats of m. 93 to the end. This alternately serenely sonoric and joyously jumping folk song first came to life as a commission by the famed chorus Chanticleer (recorded on their album Then and There, Here and Now). For Christopher Creviston and his Arizona State University Saxophone Studio, Garrop has created a stellar arrangement for double SATB saxophone choir (or more). PROGRAM NOTES: In December of 2019, when I started working on this piece, Boeing conducted the first orbital test flight of its CST-100 Starliner capsule. This event was important because, since the retiring of the space shuttle program in 2011, NASA had no other way to deliver astronauts into orbit, except through Russia. Boeing is one of two companies working to get American astronauts into space on American capsules. This was of special interest to me, not only because I am a space enthusiast, but because my own cousin worked on the Starliner's systems. PERFORMANCE NOTES: The main theme should be pleasant and legato, almost as if gliding. The second theme should be noble, as if heading where no one has gone previously. When the two themes come together, the contrast between them should not be stark as they were always intended to be played as one. Additionally, in mm. 9-26 of the Percussion 2 part, the bell of the cymbal is to be struck with a snare stick.PROGRAM NOTES:In December of 2019, when I started working on this piece, Boeing conducted the first orbital test flight of its CST-100 Starliner capsule. I love the winter season, perhaps because I was born in February. My hometown is known for its cold weather in winter. In fact, my first name Yukiko means snow girl. My parents gave me this name because it was snowing on the day I was born. Before I started to write the piece, various images depicting the scenery of a snowy morning developed in my mind. Imagine that there is no wind, no sound, and it is a very clear morning. I heard the sound of an organ playing a traditional chorale somewhere from a distance. This is the scenery of my imagination for this piece. You will find many inner melodies, dialogues and conversations between the instruments throughout the piece. Listen carefully to the other instruments and stay in tune while you play.I love the winter season, perhaps because I was born in February. My hometown is known for its cold weather in winter. It was 1995 when I had the fortune to listen to the freshly published recording of the suites performed by Mstislav Rostropovich. I would have given anything to be able to play them, and this was what inspired me to study the bass clarinet. The series of diverse emotions which I subsequently experienced made me see Music in a completely new way. I began learning them slowly, inevitably adapting the text. As I discovered their educational value, the knowledge of harmonic structures, forms and stylistic features gradually evolved within me. Over 20 years I have studied various editions and listened to the meaning which these suites have had for many famous performers. I pleasantly discovered the commendable work of other clarinettists who in turn have dedicated themselves to approaching this composer with the bass clarinet. The objective of this version isn’t to impose conditions on how to play the suites. We carried out unique research into the coherence of the text, based on the manuscripts of Anna Magdalena Bach and Johann Peter Kellner. The choice to remove any type of articulation and agogic was made in order to encourage the development of personal interpretation, which obviously requires a fundamental investigation of the sources. This edition comes with 4 versions of the suite. The reason behind producing four versions (which are in different keys and tones) is because every musician has their own tastes and tendencies. Personally, I prefer the bass clef transposed to B flat because I find the bass clef to be the most appropriate for the spirit of the low instrument.
