Have you ever yearned to perform a whole bunch of great piccolo orchestral excerpts all in one concert, programming the music yourself, without waiting through the tacet movements, and without a loud brass section behind you? Julia Grenfell’s PICCOLO RIDICOLO is a beautifully theatrical medley of favorite orchestral solos from Tchaikovsky to Beethoven to Ravel, scored for piccolo trio. The three players rotate equally between the lead part and the accompaniment to share the fun (and terror). The 9-minute work celebrates 10 favorite piccolo highlights, and more!.The prototype for Piccolo Ridicolo was first created for a joint piccolo recital at the Australian Flute Festival in Brisbane, July 2017. The recital was performed by the three piccoloists from the Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide Symphony Orchestras: Rosamund Plummer (SSO), Andrew Macleod (MSO), and me (ASO).When searching for a final piece that we could all play together as a trio, I came up a little short. Who would have guessed there would be so little repertoire for three piccolos? Thus the idea for Piccolo Ridicolo was born – a celebratory and humorous collaboration for three piccolos, with much debt and apologies owed to Rossini, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, and more.Thank you Andrew and Rose for being my first guinea pigs, my ASO flute colleagues for various road tests, my sister Maria Grenfell for her initial typesetting, and my mentor Leone Buyse for encouraging me to seek publication of the piece.

A strong, bold piece built on fanfare gestures, this piece for very beginning strings uses techniques within the grasp of students with as little as ten weeks of study on an instrument.A majestic piece that should bring about the feeling of pride with its ceremonial and celebratory nature. The piece begins with a fanfare gesture using open harmonies, that leads to a sweeping main theme. There is a more subdued and lyrical second theme, followed by some interplay between sections. The fanfare material from the beginning serves as the transitional glue along with the intro and outro for the pieceto tie it all together. The piece is written for the youngest of students in mind with minimal notes and simple repeated eighth-note rhythms. As with all of my piece for beginning students, it is up to you, the teacher, to adjust the tempo of the piece to the needs of your students. My tempo marking is merely a suggestion. It has been my pleasure to have the opportunity to write this piece. I hope you and your students enjoy it and find it useful for your program.—Larry ClarkLakeland, FL 2016.

To mark its 50th anniversary, the Flute Society of Washington commissioned Daniel Dorff to compose a celebratory work for large flute ensemble, to premiere en masse at its 2016 convention. Dorff responded with Fireworks, a 5-minute dazzler scored for 2 piccolos, 4 C flutes, 2 altos, 2 basses, and 1 contrabass. In describing performance of Fireworks, Dorff says: Real pyrotechnic fireworks typically shoot upward quickly and neatly, pop at the top, and then cascade downward slowly in a beautifully out-of-sync descent. Fireworks has many passages musically depicting this crisp upward whoosh exploding into downward sprinkles, often punctuated by a pop at the top.PERFORMANCE SUGGESTIONS1) FIREWORKS may be performed by any size ensemble ranging from 11 soloists up to a large festival choir. It may be preferable to keep the piccolos at one player per part even when the other parts have multiple players.2) Real pyrotechnic fireworks typically shoot upward quickly and neatly, pop at the top, and then cascade downward slowly in a beautifully out-of-sync descent. FIREWORKS has many passages musically depicting this crisp upward whoosh exploding into downward sprinkles, often punctuated by a pop at the top.3) All dynamics are relative to the whole blend, and some performance situations may require attention and adjustments to keep the balance as notated.4) The “puh†effect with x-shaped noteheads in the Bass and Contrabass parts is a beatbox technique sounding similar to pizzicato. There is naturally-produced flute pitch along with the percussive attack.5) “Like tolling bells†(bar 191 onward) indicates a rapid decay of each note, like church bells. This will help the antiphonal echo beginning in bar 195, and the seating placement may also enhance the antiphonal effect.

Adler's ninth turn at string quartet composition was written for the Esterhazy Quartet, who were pleased to perform the world premiere in April, 2009 with the composer in attendance. Violinist Susan Jensen described the work as energetic, spirited, humorous and celebratory. The premiere follows an all-Adler 80th birthday celebration by the Esterhazy in the previous year, so this new String Quartet No. 9 is a treat. Three of the four movements proceed at a fast pace, and the Quartet is for advanced performers.

Composer's Notes When I met Kelsey Rose in Oxford in St. Stephen’s House chapel over the summer of 2017, we had both just attended a very moving candlelit concert by Westminster Williamson Voices, featuring my setting of “Tenebrae lumini.†I was delighted to be asked to write a piece for compline in Princeton University Chapel, celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Anglican/Episcopal chaplaincy at Princeton University. “Aurora†is the result of that meeting. Composing by commission often throws up some interesting challenges. The piece had to fit both as an accompanying piece to the plainchant of compline, whilst simultaneously being a celebratory anthem. I was instantly drawn back to the poetry and hymns of St. Ambrose of Milan, particularly “Aurora iam spargit polum.†Fragments of chant (both real and imagined) are used to create the powerful imagery of the descending golden light of dawn. The piece reaches its climax with the plea for the despair of night to “vanish,†which it then does, leaving the sopranos alone on a high G.

In 1892 Dvorak received a prestigious commission from New York to write a festive cantata to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's discovery of America. In response he wrote an impressive work in a very short space of time - his Te Deum, which expresses in celebratory style the old hymn of praise in four effective, contrasting sections. In preparing the Carus edition, a careful assessment has been made of the variant readings of the autograph score and first printed edition, drawing on these as sources. The result is that the work is newly available in a modern, scholarly edition. The complete performance material is available on sale. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.2718900.

Fanfare from Monument to Color and Light opens the set (from the orchestral tone poem written for the Colorado National Monument centennial), with melodic lines jumping through the shimmering ensemble. Front Range Fanfare, originally for brass ensemble (114-41470), was inspired by Ewazen's first glimpse of the Rockies rising up from the plains of Colorado. Says Ewazen, It is grand and majestic, with bold, melodic motives that leap and jump, leading to a resonant and celebratory chorale, bringing these two fanfares to a heroic finale..
