The Missa pastoralis bohemica (Bohemian Shepherds' Mass), composed in 1796 by Mozart's contemporary Jakub Jan Ryba, is the most significant of the so-called Czech Christmas Masses. These are masses in a folkloristic style, in which the individual movements consist of a series of vocal-instrumental scenes in the Czech language; their topic is the birth of Christ and they are performed during the Christmas service. The story is about four Czech shepherds to whom the birth of Christ is announced, whereupon they visit the child in the manger. Ryba's mass became so famous that it is regarded - even today - as a symbol of Czech Christmas. The present critical edition represents the first edition of the work in its original form and the original keys; it contains a singable alternate text in German. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4067800.

In the musical-historical context Anton Diabelli is among a transitional group of Biedermeier composers who cannot be classed as either classical or romantic. Diabelli's intention was to publish this Mass in accordance with the tradition of his teacher Michael Haydn as a Country Mass, although its technical demands and also its length far exceeded those customary in a Country Mass and Missa brevis. The extant sources offer scope for performance in various different versions as regards the instrumentation used, all these versions having the right to be considered authentic. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2300700.

The choral cantatas are Reger's most personal and most substantial contribution to one of the principal categories of Protestant church music, and they are only major works in this field by one of the foremost composers of his time. This is true despite the fact that Reger himself does not appear to have considered the cantatas to figure among his principal compositions, as he gave them no opus numbers. In contrast to the three other chorale cantatas of Reger which exist in a definitive form, there is no record of the place or date of the first performance of O wie selig, or indeed of any performance of it during the composer's lifetime. Score and part available separately - see item CA.5040500.

With Carl Friedrich Zelter's motet Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme, Hermann Max, editor of the Choral Treasury series, has uncovered a real treasure. The three-verse text of the motet for mixed choir (SATB) and basso continuo was written by Friedrich Gottlob Klopstock who kept close to the Advent song of the same name by Philipp Nicolai. During Zelter's lifetime, the motet enjoyed great popularity. And quite rightly so: For the music teacher and friend of Goethe turned out to be a composer with an extraordinary sense of tone. An introductory choral movement is followed by a captivating bass aria which can be optionally sung by all basses of the choir. The piece culminates in an elaborate virtuoso fugue with an interwoven cantus firmus in the bass. A demanding, yet highly rewarding rarity in church music!

These two sonnet settings, in much simpler forms than here, were originally part of my piano concerto. The presence of a male chorus within the concerto represents a kind of homage to Busoni, a composer whom I have always admired and whose piano concerto has a men's chorus in the last movement. I had used a chorus of Russian bass voices in my double bass concerto, so there is precedence within my own work. My choice of the poetry of the great Scottish poet Edwin Morgan alludes to my other work with male choirs, having already set six of his Sonnets from Scotland by this time. The two sonnets are heard in their entirety in the concerto, and one of them - The Solway Canal - gives a subtitle to the concerto, just as Kukol'nik's Farewell to St Petersburg gives a subtitle to the double bass concerto. Anton Bruckner's Te Deum - a high point in the composer's output and one of the most important works of the sacred choral repertoire in the 19th century - is now available in a modern, scholarly edition. The Carus edition draws on both the two sources regarded as important, the autograph score and the first printed edition, with careful consideration given to variant readings. And so a music text has been prepared which reflects the composer's intentions as closely as possible. Great emphasis has been placed on a clear-to-read layout of the full score pages, as well as excellent legibility for the parts, which are available on sale. With current performance practice in mind, the clarinet parts are notated in B flat instead of A, corresponding with the first printed edition. The vocal score has been newly prepared to reflect current practical requirements. As an economical alternative, a chorus score is available. Bruckner's Te Deum is also available in carus music, the choir app. The app contains the music and a recording, as well as a coach to help with learning each choral part. In preparation: arrangement of the Te Deum for soli, choir, brass quintet and organ. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2719000.

Sacred works occupy a large part of Charles Gounod's oeuvre. It was the Messe solennelle en l'honneur de Sainte Cecile that established his fame as a church composer. Its melodic invention and effective handling of the orchestra reveal a close proximity to opera. This Urtext edition is based not only on the original print of 1856 but also on copyists' manuscripts and autograph sources. Rounding off this well-researched Urtext edition are an informative Introduction and a detailed Critical Commentary. The edition is being published to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Gounod's birth.* Gounod's well-known mass in a new Urtext edition* Bilingual Foreword (Ger/Eng) and Critical Commentary (Eng)* Idiomatic piano reduction* In preparation for the Gounod bicentenary year 2018

Max Bruch succeeded in composing an impressive setting of the well known Advent text, O Heiland, reiss die Himmel auf (O Saviour, tear open the heavens). Compositionally it is extremely sophisticated in its construction; Bruch combines both the choir and orchestra in a powerfully expressive and moving portrayal of mankind waiting for the coming of the Saviour. Following the premiere of the work in 1869 it was celebrated as Bruch's most important choral work, but later it fell largely into oblivion. Almost 150 years after it was composed, for the first time a critical-scholarly edition is now available to the public. Score and part available separately - see item CA.1036400.

The motets and choral pieces, composed with the distinctive features of the Madeleine organ in mind, enchant with their colourful, floating harmonies and convey a certain intimacy even with their ritualized Latin texts. These works are very well suited for performances by small vocal ensembles. A novelty is the inclusion of the double bass part (ad libitum) which does not appear consistently in the first editions but corresponds to the musical practice at the Madeleine.Numerous gems such as the “Cantique de Jean Racine†or the “Messe basse†are published in performing editions based on the musical text of the “Gabriel Faur – Å’uvres complètesâ€.
