Composer Orlando Gibbons was the leading English composer of his time the late 16th and early 17th century. This five-Voice SSATB madrigal is the best known of his many madrigals and remains compellingly beautiful.The sheet music also includes A Catch on Tobacco by theologian philosopher and composer Dr Henry Aldrich. It dates from 1685 when the composer was Dean of Christ Church Oxford and widely known among his contemporaries as a convivial soul who among his writings created a Latin epigramme listing five reasons for drinking. The performance notes stipulate that the round is to be sung by four men while smoking their pipes.

Scored for unaccompanied SSATB and SATB choirs this works was commissioned by Westminster School London.

This five-minute anthem was written for the UK?s Thomas Tallis Society, having in mind Tallis?s famous work for 5 voices with latin text, Salvator Mundi. The music matches the sense of anguish in the text.

J?ai composé cette messe dans les premières années de ma présence à Notre-Dame, avant la création de l?association Musique sacrée à Notre-Dame de Paris et la restructuration de la maîtrise sous sa forme actuelle. La maîtrise existait déjà, bien sûr ; on enseigne en effet le chant en ce lieu depuis le Moyen-Âge, à l?époque où la cathédrale était encore en construction, il y a plus de 850 ans. À la fin des années 1980, la maîtrise était bien différente de ce qu?elle est devenue maintenant. Elle était alors dirigée par le chanoine Jehan Revert, maître de chapelle, qui fut pour moi un véritable guide, et dont la mémoire restera toujours dans le c?ur des musiciens de Notre-Dame. C?est donc à cette époque que j?ai composé cette messe qui fut à la fois ma première composition et ma première ?uvre liturgique. Elle est volontairement très courte, d?où son titre, pour répondre du mieux possible aux contraintes liturgiques. Elle est aussi le reflet de mon profond attachement à ce lieu unique et tellement inspirant pour le jeune musicien que j?étais alors. Introit for the feast of All Saints-'This short celebratory setting originally composed as an introit for the Wells Cathedral Girl Choristers was arranged for SSATB in 2010 (the upper parts unaltered) for the Exon Singes Festival. The text ('Let us all rejoice') exists in a number of versions and here honours 'all the saints at whose solemnly the angels rejoice'. The texture essentially imitative is governed by a syncopated melodic phrase which gives way to softer material in the middle section. The return of the opening idea drives the piece towards a broad jubilant conclusion.'John Phibbs

Of Noblest Cities is intended for a choir of between 12 and about 40 voices although it may also be given by just six singers one to a part (SSATBB). The piece can be performed unaccompanied if no suitable organ is available simply by leaving approximately two crotchet beats of silence between the end of the last note of one verse and the beginning of the next.Underlying the melody is a simple rhythm which is sometimes expanded or contracted. In the first verse the position of the main beats in this rhythm is made clear by the barlines. In the remaining verses however the barlines are only there to help the singers to keep together and forconvenience in rehearsal: singers should observe their own strong beats which fall in different places for each part and not regard the barlines as indicating downbeats. A few of the strong beats which underlie individual parts and appear to be contradicted by the barlines are marked by the symbol / .The words are a beautiful Victorian translation of a Latin hymn by Prudentius which meditates on the story of the three wise men.
