Denmark Revisited - Danish choral works for mixed voices a cappella. The University Choir Lille MUKO and soprano Else Torp, conducted by Jesper Grove Jørgensen. For many years now there has been a broad international interest in performing Danish choral works, not least from the 20th century, but often the Danish lyrics have been a hindrance in realising this goal outside Denmark. With this in mind we have thought it important to make Danish choral music more available through the release of selected works in which the Danish text is translated into English. With the present choice we have endeavoured to present works which fully demonstrate the wide range and originality ofDanish choral music: the particular, lyrical Danish tone of Svend S. Schultz and Jørgen Jersild; the original simplicity of Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen; the characteristically Danish late romanticism of P.E. Lange-Müller and Rued Langgaard; and the music of composers with their own particular musical idiom, such as Vagn Holmboe, Bernhard Lewkovitch, and Bo Holten. We have also tried to choose works with lyrics by writers that are specifically Danish in origin, including Hans Christian Andersen, Johannes V. Jensen, and Tove Ditlevsen. This short orchestral piece is a tone poem based on a passage from one of Hans Christian Andersen's lesser known fairytales, THE WIND TELLS ABOUT WALDEMAR DAAE AND HIS DAUGHTERS, a mighty allegory about the transitoriness of Life, about Vanity and Pride and the inevitable victory of Death (alias the wind), whose scything ravaging is sublimely depicted by Andersen in these few, truly breathtaking lines: And Winter rushed, Winter and Summer they rushed, and they rush, like I rush, like the howling snow, the flurrying apple blossom, the scurrying foliage; rush! rush! The people too!.

Come lift me up (for mixed chorus, SATB -) -) the second movement may be performed by a children's chorus or by the female voices (SSA) from a mixed chorus Programme Note From my very first aquaintance with these Andersen poems, I was deeply moved by the simple, almost naive, yet evocative imagery, with which Andersen realized his visions, images like: The Melody of the Heart, The Poem of Beauty, A Spiritual Hindustan, Fly, Death, over the Sea of Time, fly to Eternal Summer. Along with this childishness Hans Christian Andersen's poetry encompasses enormous - almost Willim Blake-ish - cosmic visions, in theinterpolations between e.g. reaching the Heaven as opposed to you'll find it in a Rosebud, or the juxtaposition of Everyday Life and Eternal Poetry - which become one. Thus the music came to life in my immediate encounter with these words, which almost sang themselves into my Musical Furnace - if you will. Per Norgard.
