Fantasy Pieces For Violoncello And Piano Op. 73

Wiener Urtext

(+)
Written in just two days in February 1849, Robert Schumann's Fantasy Pieces Op. 73 were first performed by his wife Clara and the clarinettist Johann Gottlieb Kotte. Initially entitled Soirée Pieces, the composer later had the works published under the name of Fantasy Pieces, thus establishing a connection with poetical aspects. The first edition published in July 1849 contained not only a clarinet part but also a violin and cello part. Since then, they have become an integral part of the Romantic repertoire for cello and piano. This edition is based on the text of the first edition as well as on subsequent corrections from Schumann's personal copy, with the extant composition manuscript serving as an important corrective. / Violoncelle Et Piano

(+)
The ups and downs of disappointed love: who could fail to sympathize with the feelings that Schumann immortalized in his song cycle Dichterliebe after Heine? The pieces range from hopeful anticipation(?Im wunderschönen Monat Mai?) to solitary grief (?Und wüssten?s die Blumen die kleinen?) and bitter sarcasm (?Die alten bösen Lieder?). Schumann knew what he was writing about: the cycleoriginated in the year of his marriage to Clara Wieck an event that took place only after years of struggle. Originally the sixteen-piece cycle was meant to include twenty lieder. Our volume reproduces the four discarded numbersin an appendix.

(+)

'Yet you a man have sensed in these songs a depth which hardly the most knowing female heart can feel!' Thus an admirer wrote to Robert Schumann concerning his song cycle Frauenliebe Und Leben.Schumann’s empathy with the highly romantic inflections of Adelbert von Chamisso‘s poetry may also have arisen from the circumstances that prompted this cycle for it was written during one of the happiest periods of hislife just before his marriage to Clara Wieck. Ever since its initial publication Frauenliebe Und Leben has been immensely popular with male and female singers alike. Now it appears for the first time in a Henleurtext edition equally well-suited for medium male or female voice (mezzo soprano or baritone).

(+)
Piano / Henle Verlag

(+)
To this day Theodor Kirchner (1823 1904) has failed to gain the recognition he deserves. A friend of Johannes Brahms and Clara Schumann the artist has been labelled a mere follower of Schumann. His demanding yet never superficially virtuosic music for piano displays an highly individual range of tender lyrical sentiments. Kirchner's writing already hints at the approaching revolution of High and Late Romantik thus pointing in the direction of Scriabin and Max Reger (the latter greatly idolized by Kirchner).

The instrumental ballad was a popular musical form in the 19th century and these four pieces for piano are Brahms’s only contribution to the genre. The composer wrote the ballades during the time of his close friendship with Clara Schumann and they exude an intimacy more typical of a vocal ballad. The pieces which Schumann enthusiastically praised were described by Brahms as being “not too difficult to play and even less difficult to understand.Brahms’s Ballades op. 10 form an integral part of the advanced piano literature. This publication represents a valuable addition to the repertoire of Brahms’s piano works in BärenreiterUrtext editions. Textes complémentaires : Jean-Jacques CESBRON, Philippe ANDRE, Frank LANGLOIS / Livre

The circumstances in which these poetic ?Soirée Pieces? (thus their original title) came into being are quite surprising. In 1849 Dresden was seized by violent political turmoil that ultimately forced Schumann to fleewith Clara to the countryside. Yet none of this is apparent in the music of these three pieces whose idyllic character signifies a longing for harmony and seclusion. Originally conceived for the Clarinet they were accompanied byalternative parts for Violin and Cello as early as the original print. We have subjected our editions to a thoroughgoing critique and include a section of detailed editorial notes.

Op 102-Although Schumann had learnt the cello for a while in his youth he only began to compose for this instrument in later life. Apart from the cello concerto only his Five Pieces op. 102 have survived as original works for thecello. Clara was delighted with them: 'These are pieces in folk style with such a freshness and originality that I was enchanted'. The 'Neue Zeitschrift für Musik' wrote: 'These pieces are less apt for a virtuoso player than awell versed one who can speak on his instrument with tone and meaning.' This edition in the best Urtext quality is particularly to be recommended for teaching purposes and for making music at home.

Franz Liszt dedicated the Grandes Etudes De Paganini to Clara Schumann whose pianistic genius he revered. Two of the Etudes in the collection deserve particular notice: no. 3 La Campanella (The Bell) enjoyed great celebrity for the extraordinary character of its sonorities. And in the closing a-minor Etude Liszt took his place next to many other composers with his variations on Paganini's famous capriccio theme. The first edition of the arrangement of the six Etudes by the pianist and composer Ferruccio Busoni was published by Breitkopf & Härtel in single editionsbetween 1914 and 1923.

(+)
Brahms's deeply moving Alto Rhapsody is one of the glories of the choral repertoire. Though it was written as a wedding song for the daughter of his friend Clara Schumann, the work clearly seems a deeply personal one for Brahms. Perhaps, as some have suggested, a melancholy reflection on his own solitary life. This great concert favorite is based on portions of the text of Goethe's Harzreise im Winter (Winter Journey in the Harz Mountains), and set for alto solo, men's chorus, and orchestra. In addition to the Alto Rhapsody, this volume contains three other major Brahms choral works: the Song of Destiny, a setting of a poem by Hölderlin: Nänie, a dirge for Brahms's friend Anselm Feuerbach, set to a text by Schiller: and Song of the Fates, set to passages from Act IV of Goethe's Iphigenie auf Tauris. All four works have been reprinted from the authoritative edition published by Breitkopf

The piano pieces opp. 116-119 were written in 1892/93 and are the last collections of pieces which Brahms wrote for the instrument. Particularly noteworthy is his use of the 'small form' accompanied by a heightened increase in musical expression compared to his earlier works.Clara Schumann probably the secret dedicatee of the Piano pieces wrote in her diary in November 1892: 'a true source of enjoyment everything poetry passion fantasy intimacy full of the most marvellous sound effects [...] In these pieces I finally feel musical life drawn into my soul again and play once more with true devotion.'A renewed critical evaluation of all known sources hasresulted in small deviations from previous readings.Johannes Brahms's most frequently performed piano pieces now available in high quality Bärenreiter Urtext editionsEvaluation of all available sourcesReflecting the latest state of researchAvailable separately:Fantasies Op.116 (BA9628)Piano Pieces Op.118 (BA9630)Piano Pieces Op.119 (BA9631)
