After a long time spent writing only for piano Schumann produced a true outburst of lieder inspired by the poetry of Heinrich Heine: ?What a blessing it is to write for the voice!? Schumann wrote to his beloved Clara. It is as though a knot was untied while he was writing the Heine-Liederkreis Op.24. Retrospectively Schumann wrote that this new poetic spirit had inspired the composition of lieder to such an extent that it had become the only genre to make significant progress since the time of Beethoven.Indeed these nine songs which represent the only complete setting of the underlying Heine cycle came so close to the spirit of the poet that a new epoch of liedcomposition was founded. No wonder the piece was initially left unprinted and only first released as a posthumous work. Schumann's widow Clara and Johannes Brahms apparently fervently believed in the piece and organized a posthumous world premiere with fellow Schumann admirers. 'The next I'll do is 3 violin quartets' wrote Schumann to Clara Wieck in 1838, stating his reasons in a letter dated 17 March 1838: 'The thought of the quartets gives me pleasure. The piano is getting too narrow for me. In composing now I often hear a lot of things that I can barely suggest. For instance, it is remarkable how I invent almost everything canonically and never discover the imitating voices until afterward, very often in inversions, inverted rhythms.' Schumann was the first to set a complete cycle of Heinrich Heine?s poems to music. His literary ?forks of lightning? had already fascinated Schumann when he was 17 years old. However he only wroteOpus 24 in 1840 in his ?year of song? choosing to set a cycle of poems from the ?Buch der Lieder?. He wrote the following to his fiancée: ?Ah Clara what bliss it is to write for the Voice?. This enthusiasm isreflected in each of the nine songs. This is Kazuko Ozawa?s third edition of a Schumann cycle to be published in Henle Urtext.
