Gustav Holst composed almost 200 works, one being a very elegant and charming fantasy on the old English christmas carols: Good Christian Men, Rejoice; God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen; Come Ye Lofty, Come and The First Nowell. The fantasy called Christmas Day was originally written for mixed choir with orchestra or organ accompaniment. Robert van Beringen has arranged this work for concert band exactly 100 years later. This three-movement symphony musically depicts the history of Hungary. Key historical figures, wars and other important events from this country inspired all three movements. The first movement depicts Atilla, the King of the Huns, and is characterised by fear, threat and aggression. The second movement focuses on Ãrpád, the founder of the Hungarian State and the final movement is named after István, the King who introduced Christianity into Hungary. The beautiful theme of the national hymn appears throughout the symphony, however it is often partially hidden. It is used as a â??thread,â? hardly recognizable at the beginning, becoming more and more obvious near the end and itconcludes the symphony as the â??final apotheosis,â? making the band sound like a majestic living organ.

Composed in 1823 but not performed during his lifetime, Franz Schubert’s Fierabras is a “number opera†with spoken dialogue in the manner of opra comique. It is based on the medieval legends associated with Charlemagne, including that of Eginhard and Emma, and draws on the old French heroic epic (chanson de geste). Emma, the daughter of Charlemagne secretly loves the knight Eginhard who is not befitting of her rank. The heathen Moorish prince Fierabras who, after being defeated by Charlemagne, falls into French captivity and converts to Christianity, is also in love with Emma. His sister Florinda on the other hand loves the Franconian knight Roland who is being held prisoner by the Moors and whom she helps to escape. After several military conflicts where Charlemagne’s army finally conquers the Moors, the lovers reunite. Only Fierabras who is reprieved, renounces his love and accepts the liaison between Emma and Eginhard.

The Englishman, Bishop Reginald Heber (1783?1826), wrote Brightestand Best of the Sons of the Morning for Epiphany. These lyrics werepublished in 1811, in the Christian Observer, but were set to music andissued in hymnal books only after Heber?s death, by English composerand organist James Proctor Harding. This attractive arrangement byHenk Hogestein will give every Christmas concert a certain elan. This suite is based on the fairy tale The Bronze Pig by Hans Christian Andersen.This is a story about a boy who wants to be a painter and a pig made of bronze. This pig, in Florence town square, is a bronze statue with clear water pouring from its mouth. Legend has it that when an innocent child sits on its back, that the pig can run. In three movements; Flying Dreams in a Starlight Sky, La Via Porta Rossa and Twilight on the Arno River this work is a highly descriptive storytelling piece that will be equally enjoyed by young and old alike. Definitely one not to be snorted at!Deze suite is gebaseerd op Het bronzen varken van Hans Christian Andersen - een sprookje over een bronzen varken en een jongetje dat kunstschilder wil worden. De plaats van handeling is de Italiaanse kunststad Florence. Decompositie bestaat uit drie delen: het sprookjesachtige Flying Dreams in a Starlight Sky, het nostalgische, stijlvolle La Via Porta Rossa en het sfeervolle Twilight on the Arno River. Het bronzen beeld van hetwaterspuwende varken is te vinden op de hoek van La Via Porta Rossa. Het origineel is het marmeren beeld uit de Griekse Oudheid dat wordt tentoongesteld in de Galleria degli Uffizi.
