Handel?s three anthems (My Song Shall Be Alway HWV 252 O Come Let Us Sing HWV 253 O Praise The Lord HWV 254) were composed in 1717 and 1718 for Cannons a country estate near to London. They take their nickname the ?Chandos Anthems? from the owner of the estate the First Duke of Chandos.The three pieces are noteworthy for their festive character and their varied orchestral accompaniment. Handel borrows older material from his Italian period and his earlier works for the Chapel Royal in London a standard procedure for this composer who reused particularly successful pieces as starting points for his later works. The scoringfor solo Voices Chorus Oboe Strings and Continuo was tailored to the musical resources of the small country estate. Two additional recorders are needed for ?O Come Let Us Sing Unto The Lord?.The anthems present the Urtext from the ?Halle Handel Edition? and include uncomplicated and easy-to-play Piano reductions. In addition to the original English words the full scores and vocal scores also include a singing translation in German.

The piece's focus lies in the two rhetorical questions first sung by the female voices at the beginning. This opening three note motif returns frequently throughout the work forever challenging the whereabouts of God's watchful eye. Recent highlights include performances at Oxford’s Sheldonian Theatre Tewkesbury Abbey St James’s Piccadilly and at the Lausanne Summer Festival by choirs and orchestras including Schola Cantorum of Oxford Commotio and The Oxford Spezzati. Future engagements include performances by the Oxford Spezzati and Laudate in London Lyon and Chester (where his latest choral commission will be premiered in September 2011). (Tenebrae version)-Stay with me Lord was originally commissioned by the Genesis Foundation as one of three commissioned settings of Padre Pio’s Prayer after Communion and first performed in June 2008 at Westminster Cathedral London by The Sixteen conducted by Harry Christophers. This version was arranged for the 2012 album The Call of Wisdom an album of a selection of Will Todd’s choral music performed by Tenebrae and The English Chamber Orchestra conducted by Nigel Short. It alters much of the way the work is accompanied both by the piano but also by adding an alternative strings and harp scoring (full score and parts available on download). Todd’s stirring harmonies which make fulluse of the mixed-voice choir with only the very occasional need for divisi and ability to write the most beautiful melodies has resulted in this work proving very popular with choirs of a range of abilities.
