Barn Dances is a set of four abstract pieces drawing their titles from the name of a particular dance step used in cowboy dances. Taking the name of the step as a point of departure Larsen's idea was to take a flight of fancy in each movement and to create the musical equivalent of a character drawing. Thus this lively set encompasses various styles including hoedown jig swing and a waltz. Suitable for concert use by conservatory students and accomplished school musicians.

Dances Of Time is a diverse collection of five choral songs addressing different aspects of time. Texts ranging from biblical to twentieth century are set to Chilcott's attractive and characterful music drawing on elements of dance forms in various styles.The work opens with a rhythmic setting of Henry VIII's famous text 'Pastime with good company' before the contrastingly wistful and reflective 'Today'. The carpe diem sentiment of 'Gather ye rosebuds' is heightened through its setting as a lively jig and in 'To every thing there is a season' a central section presents the paired images of the text from Ecclesiastes enclosed by almosthymn-like outer segments. The one-act ballet Job has been described as one of Vaughan Williams's mightiest achievements. It is a work which in a full production combines painting literature music and dance. The work was inspired by William Blake's Illustrations of the Book of Job and includes quotations from the King James Bible.The result is a musical masterpiece combining the ancient and the modern: Vaughan Williams's earlier style is in evidence including tranquil pastoral melodies but the work also anticipates the composer's later style.
