3 Hymnic Dispositions- 3 Hymniske Ansatser (3 Hymnic Dispositions) for mixed choir SATB was composed by Per Nørgård in 1985-86. The work consists of music composed to 3 poems e.g. Gunnar Ekelöf ´Komposition (Composition) Thøger Larsen ´Strandvalmue´(´Beach Poppy´) Rainer Maria Rilke ´Die Parke´(´The Parks´) Programme note Just as the three movements in their succession move from the sea (Ekelöf) across the beach (Larsen) and into the country to the parks (Rilke) in an analogous wayeach of the three movements in their point of departure is hymnic in character - but later on moves into the more varied and complex tone paths of the inner regions of the mind. 3 Hymniske Ansatser (3 Hymnic Dispositions) is sung in Swedish (1. Komposition” Gunnar Ekelöf) in Danish (2. Strandvalmue” Thøger Larsen) and in German (3. “Die Parke” R.M. Rilke). The work could be performed in a programme with 'Prelude to Breaking' performed after this instrumental piece. Per Nørgård

43 Klavierstücke Op. 68-In 1848 after finishing an album of little Piano pieces for his daughter Marie Schumann devised the plan of compiling a ‘children’s album’. Since then the resultant collection of 43 pieces has enjoyed unparalleled success. Schumann’s Album For The Young is now presented in an Urtext edition which meets the needs of performers. In addition to the famous ‘Advice to Young Musicians’ (in German English and a French translation by Liszt) other pieces related to this work but left unpublished during Schumann’s lifetime can be found in the appendix. For the first time thisedition also includes Clara Schumann’s original pedal markings. Clara’s fingering served Ragna Schirmer as an important point of departure for her own thoughts on fingering. Urtext edition at the cutting edge of scholarship. Many additional pieces and ‘Advice to Young Musicians’ in the appendix. Original pedal markings by Clara Schumann and fingering by Ragna Schirmer. Per Nørgård's Wölfli - A Discarded MisfitDramatic Choir Montage for an Actor/Recitator and Chamber Chorus (2007). Extracts from the preface:No idyll without catastrophe – no catastrophe without idyll.Adolf Wölfli (1864-1931 Switzerland) is a central figure in the so called mad arts i.e. art created by patients who are certifyably mentally ill. Wölfli’s vast and eclectic production consists of approximately 20.000 pages of prose poetry pictures and fragmentary musical compositions. All of which was created at an institutionin Waldau Bern from 1900-1931 (...). Danish composer Per Nørgård (born 1932) discovered by accident Wölfli’s art at the Louisiana Museum while on his way to a Schönberg concert a concert he never made it to. The encounter with Wölfli’s art was to become a major source of inspiration for Nørgård in the 1980’s. The inspiration resulted in Nørgård’s SYMPHONY NO. 4 (1981) entitled Indischer Roosen-Gaarten und Chineesischer Hexensee (after the title on a planned Musikbüchlein by Wölfli) and the opera THE DIVINE TIVOLI (1982) and numerous choral works. Nørgård’s works from the 1980’s inspired by Wölfli are characterised by being wild dramatic and moving. The present work WÖLFLI has its point of departure in the choral works of the 1980’s and songs and interludes from the opera. All this is combined with additional prose poetry and pictures by Wölfli which come together to form a music-dramatic portrait of the confined his thoughts and artistic universe. Whereas the opera was a scenic tour de force of intense drama polyphonic scenarios and whirling instrumentation thefocus in WÖLFLI is monologue and

The poems for this work were taken from Rabindranath Tagore's Gitanjali (Song Offerings) written in India around 1910 during a restless almost sleepless period in the poets life. Introduced to the west in 1912 they became widely recognized for their simple captivating descriptions of nature and their yearning spiritual tone. Almost every line is filled with natural images and a wandering restless mood is ever present. This sense is captured by the composer in his setting for voice alto saxophone and piano. Movement titles: I. Nightfall II. Light III. Departure.

Improvised Music - Essays And Interviews by Jakob Thorkild Overgaard. From the preface: This book is the child of my extensive personal experienceas performer of musical improvisation. I havea large number of concerts recordings and bands inmy baggage and throughout my career as performerI have reflected much on the music as such its origins and its effects on performer and listener alike. In addition to this my M.A. in Music from CopenhagenUniversity provided me with a theoretical foundationwhich has sharpened my reflections on musicand fostered an interest inthe spoken word.As its point of departure this book will attempt a discussionof improvised music after 1968 as a conceptand as an actual performing art. I shall use the terms‘free improvisation’ or ’ freely improvised music’ – as Ithink that they are the best although I am of coursefully aware that there may be several other adequateterms for this music... ...There are sections solely based on my views and analyses as well as sections taking their starting point in the views of other writers and artists. Besides the book contains interviews and communications with prominent performers of improvised music and theorists such as inter alia Danish Peter Ole Jørgensen Swedish Raymond Strid Danish Vagn E. In a four-part composition Rieks van der Velde takes us to the richly varied area surrounding the university city of Cambridge. The Dutch composer was especially inspired by the atmosphere of Cambridgeshire the county which lies north ofLondon. 1. The Journey. Although on arrival the area looks peaceful and friendly the ruggedness of its inhabitants and landscape have an unmistakable influence on the music. In the course of the tour which starts with an Allegromovement we are shown the vitality energy and freshness of the Cambridgeshire countryside. Short themes swift and sudden motifs and rhythmical patterns supported by the drive of percussion instruments give expression to this image. Thefirst part is concluded by two Calmo movements in which the music expresses how the cathedral in the city of Ely comes into sight and is gradually approached. 2. Visit to Ely Cathedral. The famous Norman cathedral church of Ely whichwas built in 1109 has attracted tourists from all over the world apart from being a place of worship and heritage site. A cornet solo introduces the contemplative mood of the composition at this point. The mystical atmosphere of thecathedral runs through this lyrical part like a continuous thread. 3. The Pub. The thirst caused by this intensive journey makes a visit to the local pub a definite must. These ?public houses? which may be open until the earlyhours of the morning offer all kinds of entertainment. Drinks are served liberally and the atmosphere is lively. 4. The Journey Back. Time has flown: In other words the moment of departure has come sooner than one would havewished. In a flashback which recaptures elements of the first part of the composition we say goodbye to Cambridgeshire in a fitting manner. Two scintillating final measures bring us abruptly back to the present.

Renowned fiddler and composer Jay Ungar and Molly Mason his musical partner and wife have run the Ashokan Fiddle and Dance Camp in upstate New York for many years. Jay wrote 'Ashokan Farewell' in 1982 at the camp season's end to express the sense of loss he felt after the departure of the musical community. The melody’s sweet haunting sadness proved to be a perfect match for Ken Burns's 1990 PBS series 'The Civil War' which introduced it to millionsof viewers. In this guitar arrangement the bass line enters as an ascending response to the melody which is then harmonized in sixths and thirds the second time through. The arrangement is a good study in position shifting upand down the fingerboard and provides a great showcase for dynamic and tonal nuance in the phrasing of the melody. It is an excellent concert selection and will be a popular addition to the repertoire of any fingerstyle player on either steel- or nylon-string guitar.

Toccata and Lament was composed on commission in 2008 to inaugurate the large new organ in the Christ Church Cathedral Rochester NY USA. This instrument is a detailed reconstruction of a late Baroque organ of 1776 from Vilnius in Lithuania. The point of departure a clash of contrasting eras and musical cultures on two continents already bodes excitement. Martin Herchenröder a composer and professor of music theory has incorporated these contrasts in his roughly eight-minute composition. The result is a musical idiom of rare distinction universal in its musical resources and alternating between tonal triads and extremely dissonant clusters. The heart of the pieceis a dirge which using the Baroque doctrine of the affections relates to Eastern European cultural history in and around Vilnius a history marked by the predations of 20th-Century war.Expressive and effective contemporary organ musicAmalgam of musical traditions from the 18th to 21st CenturyExplanatory foreword by the composer (Ger/Eng)

16 well-known original pieces in progressive order of difficulty with practical comments-Johann Sebastian Bach is more or less the alpha and omega of piano playing: there is hardly a piano pupil who did not start off with his little preludes or his inventions. And almost all pianists regard his Well-tempered Clavieras an unsurpassed highpoint in the history of piano music. Our volume follows these well-trodden paths but not without the occasional sideways glance at some less prominent pieces by the Master such as his picturesque ?Capriccioon the departure of a beloved brother?.

All roads lead to Rome as the saying goes - but do all roads also lead to Ixtlan perhaps at another time? Ixtlan being the city of the highest aspirations of the Mexican sorcerer Don Genaro (according to Carlos Casteneda the anthropologist publishing a series of books on Don Juan Don Genaro's col-league). There was no final outcome to Genaro's journey and there will never be one. I will never reach Ixtlan he said so Genaro is still on his way there.(Ixtlan may perhaps be interpreted as the inner goal of your heart). In any case: in these three movements the three points of departure are utterly different; still they unanimously move towardsjust one melodic outcome a kind of musical centre of gravitation.

‘Rhapsody for Tienhoven’ is a short concert for saxophone and fanfare band. The solo part in its instrumentation distinguishes itself from the other saxophone solos. The soloist should be able to play both the alto and soprano saxophone. The piece consists of four parts which almost blend into one another.A four-tone motif (which is played a number of times by the soloist at the beginning) has been taken as the point of departure for this composition. This motif has been worked out in different ways and can be heard in a swing rhythm in the final part. This piece exacts a high standard of the soloist’s technical skills. The ‘Rhapsody forTienhoven’ was originally written for the fanfare band ‘Soli Deo Gloria’ from Tienhoven.

Opera-Poul Ruders' opera Tycho in 3 Acts was premiered May 15 1987 by Aarhus Symphony Orchestra and Kaare Hansen (conductor) at Helsingør Theater in Aarhus Denmark. Libretto in Danish by Henrik Bjelke. Full score: WH31457 Synopsis: In 1597 the famous Danish astronomer and astrologist the nobleman Tycho Brahe flees his castle cum observatory Uraniburg on one of the small islands off the Danish coast. The newly coronated King Christian the Fourth has a grudge against Tycho who in 1572 discovered a new star Stella Nova by using his naked eye only; the telescopewasn’t invented yet. This discovery gained Tycho tremendous fame among his contemporaries within the European scientific circles. The now weakened and embittered old man moves together with his wife Christina whom he raped when she was an adolescent and Jeppe the Dwarf his fool-servant whose life Tycho once saved to the plague-infested city of Prague. There at the Benatky Castle Tycho encounters the main reason for his departure from Denmark: the young German mathematician Johannes Kepler the only scientist among his contemporaries Tycho acknowledges - Tycho is in severe need of intelligent challenge. Which he gets and with a disastrous result for himself. The encouraging encounter with Kepler turns into Tycho's scientific and earthly death verdict. Slowly Tycho realizes that his own conception of the Earth as the indisputable axes of the Universe is shattered by Kepler s theory about Earth encircling the stationary Sun. The ancient picture of the Universe collapses Tycho feels deceived by Kepler who leaves the castle shaken by Tycho's wrath. But they meet again and reunite in a Romanza a Due at Tycho’s death bed. The opera hovers above immense sadness and extreme ridicule - the cast is most peculiar indeed - so in many ways 'TYCHO' may be described at the best as a 'Tragic Operetta'

Par LIANG LEI. Having been interested in Mahayana Buddhism for a number of years, I went to a Buddhist monastery in upstate New York to study meditation in 1999. One evening, while walking alone by the side of the lake, I caught the sight of a “V” shape floating and extending on the surface of the water. It was a beaver taking a swim under the moon. This image gave me insight into my relationship with silence: underneath the music is a profoundly deep silence upon which I seek to inscribe my signature through sound. It serves as a point of departure that led to a series of works.
