The musical material derives from transformations of the carol melody, which only appears with any degree of literalness in a dream like passage close to the beginning and vanishes – though, in some sense, its dna is present in every bar. The piece is through composed and consists of slow – at times, elegiac – music flanking fast central episodes. Two chords, which seem to signify a kind of question at the very beginning, return twice, later in the work.

A song cycle for baritone voice, string orchestra and piano. The composer writes: Naarasäiti (The Lustful Mother) is about becoming a mother, an experience in which sexuality combines in a natural way with the birth of a new life. The texts of the cycle are from the collections of poems Äitejä, tyttäriä (Ãrbeeadni, The Time of the Lustful Mother, 2013) and Kylmä kumppani (Galbma rádna, My Cold Companion, 1999) by two contemporary Sámi poets, Rauni Magga Lukkari and Rose-Marie Huuva. The poems’ primitive, matriarchal beat is present throughout in the music: a dark, earthy solo viola accompanies the baritone while the sizzling, sparkling strings erupt at times in powerfultextures.

In 1990, Ewazen wrote his Three Lyrics of Edna St. Vincent Millay for soprano Jody Dall'Armi with piano accompaniment. About ten years later, Ewazen created a version for trumpet and piano, and also for trumpet and marimba. Answering a commission by Cantabile Chamber Chorale in celebration of their 20th anniversary season, Ewazen set the first poem, God's World, for mixed chorus and piano. The text celebrates the wonder and beauty of our world, but with an understanding of the fleeting temporal passing inherent in each view. Ewazen's lush melodic lines are crafted to match.

Songs of Love and Loss was originally written for bass voice and piano, and premiered by Bryan Matthews at Juilliard in 1984. Subsequently in 2004, I arranged the work for Bass Trombone and Piano for Charlie Vernon, who premiered the work at the International Trombone Association Festival at Ithaca College. The poetry of Edna St. Vincent Millay, with her beautiful, sometimes enigmatic, and always evocative poetry was the inspiration for the four songs of this cycle. (Eric Ewazen).
