Par WILLIAMS JOHN / HVEEM DAVID (Arr.). «Cantina Band (or «Mad About Me») was written by John Williams in 1977 for the film Star Wars (later Star Wars IV: A New Hope). Even with quite a bit of the Star Wars music being quite well known, Cantina Band is literally in a style of its own. In the Star Wars-universe this style is called «jizz», Williams’ take on the more well-known genre «jazz». Williams was tasked by Star Wars-creator George Lucas to make music that sounded like «several creatures in a future century finding some 1930's Benny Goodman swing band music ... and how they might attempt to interpret it» and ended up with Cantina Band #1 and #2. Both numbers are played in the legendary scene taking place in Chalmun's Spaceport Cantina where Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi gets in a fight causing even the band to stop playing. The band, which goes by the name Figrin D'an and the Modal Nodes, comes from the planet Clak'dor VII and specializes in jizz and the nearby, slightly older style of jatz. Performers of this music often go by the name 'jizz-wailers', and the Bith people from Clak'dor VII are especially well suited for jizz-wailing since they can hold every note as long as they want thanks to a unique respiratory system - something many perhaps would like to be able to do in the performance of this arrangement as well. The arrangement is relatively faithful to Williams' original version, but with a somewhat different ending. Although the woodwind section undoubtedly has the biggest technical challenges, an understanding of the musical style is the very key to making the arrangement sound good - and here all groups must work together. Playing lightly but quite articulated, and very precise, will be an absolute necessity to get the music drifting off all the way to Tatooine. Score-Charles Ives' Third Symphony ‘The Camp Meeting’ is the most concisely-scored of his five symphonies. Containing only Strings a few Winds Horns and Trombone this is a clear and uncluttered reminiscence of nineteenth centuryAmerica as viewed through some of its traditional hymn tunes and in doing so evokes the old 'camp meetings' which were such a feature of pioneer life. The first movement ‘Old Folks' Gatherin'’ is a patchwork of hymntunes drifting through an unpredictable constantly changing harmonic orientation. After a climax is reached a quiet passage opens with oboe and flute over hushed distant strings. Ives reintroduces part of the middle section and settles down to a quiet coda ending the movement almost imperceptibly. The second movement ‘Children's Day’ opens with strings in two parts over Haydnesque eighth notes in the horns. ‘There is a Fountain Filled withBlood’ ‘Happy Land’ ‘Naomi’ and ‘There's Music in the Air’ all are heard. As this is a movement depicting children at play Ives is playful himself weaving hymn tunes into one another in a somewhat tongue-in-cheek manner. Thethird movement ‘Communion’ is darker in tone than the others and provides a psychologically satisfactory close to the work as a whole. This is the 1990 edition of the Score The Charles Ives Society Critical Edition edited byKenneth Singleton and reprinted in 2001. It contains substantial notes on Ives and this work.

My extended version with a slow introduction was first played in Boston on 29th January 1995 by Lesley Chen and NathanSchmidt members of the New England Conservatory's Preparatory Division during their annual weekend festival of contemporary music. This very remarkable and encouraging event was devised and organised by Rodney Lister to whomthis piece is dedicated.Duration c. 2 minutes.Atlantic DriftAn earlier even shorter version of Atlantic Drift written for violin and piano was first performed by PeterSheppard Skaerved and Aaron Schorr at the Royal Academy of Music London on 9th May 2006 in a concert to celebrate the 70th birthday of the American composer and transatlantic communicator Elliott Schwartz. The melody isoriginal though clearly influenced by the music and perpetual tides of the Hebrides.
