French composer and conductor Henri Tomasi (1901-1971) published Trois Pastorales for Flute Trio in 1964. As with his other wind compositions  Trois Pastorales was well-received by audiences. Tomasi was born in Marseille but his Father and Mother were originally from La Casinca in Corsica. Despite being pressured in to musical studies by his parents Tomasi dreamed of becoming a sailor and during the summer he stayed with his Grandmother in Corsica where he learnt traditional Corsican songs. However in 1921 he began his studies at the Paris Conservatoire and went on to become ahigh profile composer and conductor. Tomasi did not forget his Corsican routes often incorporating themes of the songs he had learned during the summers with his Grandmother in to his compositions. The Trois Pastorales are named; 1) Bolivian 2) Cretan and 3) Sicilienne. This Tomasi piece is suitable to an advanced Flute Trio providing an exciting alternative addition to the ensemble repertoire.

Radiant Music was written for flautist Alice K. Dade at her request for a short recital piece. The CD part is made up of several episodes of shimmering music for flutes dulcimers organs and sampled baroque strings trumpet and choir. This piece attempts to obsess over a repeated sequence of chords – this progression appears in the opening bars of the piece. This sequence reappears in each episode as a harmonic goal for the flute whose part circumnavigates it but never hits it exactly. Also at play in Radiant Music is a notion of fast music that moves slowly versus slow music that moves quickly. This is most evident in the Throbbing musicwhich is very fast but has an immensely slow harmonic motion and in the conclusion which is made of one chord reworked over a long stretch of time. Parts for Hans Abrahamsen's Flowersongs (2012 version) for Flute Oboe and Clarinet. 'I wrote Flowersongs for three Flutes in the spring of 1973 when I was 20 years old. Looking back now 40 years begins to feel like a really long time and sometimes I think that it is as if someone in 1973 is talking about a piece from 1933! But in spite of this long time this is still a very important piece for me. In Flowersongs along with works like '10 Preludes' for String Quartet and 'Stratifications' for Orchestra I feel that I was on my way to finding my own voice in the middle of the music of the great CentralEuropean modernist tradition from the 50s and the reaction from the 60s of the new simplicity minimalism and the possibility of poly-stilisme. The English title Flowersongs links to the flower power movement and the hippie culture of the 60s and the early 70s and the work is trying to find the power inherent in this imaginary world. Many of my later works have titles in German for example 'Winternacht' (1976/78) 'Nacht und Trumpeten' (1981) and much later 'Schnee' (2006-08). If we think of Flowersongs in German it must be Blumenlieder and to me it now sounds suddenly very different more romantic and into the world of Schumann. Perhaps it is also a way in which to hear the piece? Another thing is that the correct English title is Flower Songs (as two words) and not as one word like in German or Danish. This is perhaps the German connection as I incorrectly wrote the title as one word; but perhaps it is also a kind of naivety which is also part of the work. I cannot help but carry with me to this day the ideas from my early works. For example there are clear links in this work from the 8th Prelude from '10 Preludes' and to Canon 2a from 'Schnee' from 2008. This work is written for the wonderful ensemble recherche and it was meeting them that made me consider making a version of

Andalag # 1 - Duo for Flute and Clarinet (2011). Part of Andalag - Suite in 11 movements. Programme note Some years ago I was asked by the Faroese ensemble Aldubáran to compose duets for the woodwinds within the ensemble. The idea then came to me to write a Suite with the name “Andalag” in 11 movements. 8 movements are duets and are approximately 4 min. long. 2 movements are quartets and are approximately 8 min. long and 1 movement is an octet which is approximately 16 min. long. In other words the Suite will last approximately 60 min.   The (octet) instrumentation is2 flutes 2 clarinets 2 horns and 2 bassoons. The Faroese word “andalag” has a multilayerd meaning. The first half of the word is “anda” and means to breath or spirit and the second half of the word “lag” means melodi mood or layer. I use two small ideas in this Suite. One idea is in a sort of major mood and the other in a sort of minor mood. Sunleif Rasmussen May 2013
