A strong, bold piece built on fanfare gestures, this piece for very beginning strings uses techniques within the grasp of students with as little as ten weeks of study on an instrument.A majestic piece that should bring about the feeling of pride with its ceremonial and celebratory nature. The piece begins with a fanfare gesture using open harmonies, that leads to a sweeping main theme. There is a more subdued and lyrical second theme, followed by some interplay between sections. The fanfare material from the beginning serves as the transitional glue along with the intro and outro for the pieceto tie it all together.The piece is written for the youngest of students in mind with minimal notes and simple repeated eighth-note rhythms. As with all of my piece for beginning students, it is up to you, the teacher, to adjust the tempo of the piece to the needs of your students. My tempo marking is merely a suggestion.It has been my pleasure to have the opportunity to write this piece. “This piece is the expression of my admiration for the married couple Hyun-Jung and Julius Berger, two remarkable musicians and outstanding violoncellists. As representatives of two different cultures which are far removed from each other in many respects, this couple forms a magnificent, harmonious family and has given the world two delightful boys. During the Asiago Festival in Italy, I had the good fortune to observe the everyday life of this wonderful family, whose relationship is based on the feeling of love, service to music, mutual trust and help. My composition is inspired by these unforgettable impressions. To speak in the language of musical associations: the clarinet part contains grace, elegance, femininity and the goodness of the wife, whereas noblesse, power, temperament and romanticism of the husband are found in the violoncello part. Consent and harmony always reign between these two parts; the roles of the soloist and accompanist are exchanged now and then, but they always maintain a benevolent agreement and complete similarity, complementing and supporting each other. Bach's chorale cantata with its opening text Wohl dem, der sich auf seinen Gott recht kindlich kann verlassen (Tis well with him who on the Lord trusts just like a child) BWV 139 was performed for the first time on 12 November 1724 in the main Leipzig church service. The cantata text, based on the hymn of the same name by Johann Christoph Rube (1665-1746), is in praise of trust in God. In the opening chorus, full of depth of feeling, the hymn melody is heard throughout; this is followed by a lively tenor aria Gott ist mein Freund (God is my friend) with a musical depiction of the adversary raging in vain, and in the bass aria Das Ungluck schlagt auf allen Seiten (Misfortune assails me on every side) Bach presents both drama and Baroque imagery. One of the two solo violin parts for the tenor aria is lost, so our edition offers a reconstruction. The virtuoso violin part of the bass aria was evidently based on a part for violoncello piccolo, now lost. The edition provides for performance by violin or violoncello.
