In many performances of Monteverdi's magnificent Vespers of the Blessed Virgin the Lauda Jerusalem and the Magnificat movements, which lie in a high tessitura, are transposed downwards. So that these can also be performed with the highly-acclaimed Carus edition, we offer both these movements individually a fourth lower. Vocal score, chorus score, and parts for this are also all available separately. Score available separately - see item CA.2780100.

The series Morgen kommt der Weihnachtsmann has been conceived for making music together in the Christmas season. Special emphasis is placed on duet playing with 2 identical instruments: with 2 violins (ED 5475), 2 violas (ED 7935), 2 violoncellos (ED 5548), 2 descant recorders (ED 7934), and 2 flutes (ED 8026). Since words have been set to the upper part (melody part), the obvious thing to do would be to perform the pieces with voice and accompaniment. The settings are easy so that even musicians with little practice can play along. This series includes two editions for piano which can be combined with all instrumental volumes: In addition to the known very easy edition for piano beginners with mainly two-part settings in five-note range ('very easy', ED 5325), there is for the first time a more sonorous two- or three-part edition for moderately advanced players ('easy to intermediate', ED 22507). This new edition is ideal for accompanying the instrumental parts.

While the solos in earlier masses form an integral part of the structure of the entire work, Christian Bach made the solo sections independent in the sense of the Neopolitan school. The orchestra is occupied with longer preludes and rustling figures. In the eleven movements, Bach was able to unite the compositional techniques and expressivity of the Baroque with the beautiful sound of an Italian cantilena. From the forward by Traugott Fedtke. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3810900.

The three grands motets, Quam dilecta, In convertendo and Deus noster refugium, which Jean-Philippe Rameau composed from 1713 to 1715 are still relatively unknown today. Yet these masterworks can stand comparison to the best works of Michel-Richard de Lalande. They are testimony to Rameau's great contrapuntal mastery and contain beautiful lyrical passages. Quam dilecta and Deus noster refugium have survived only in later sources which originated in about 1770, after Rameau's death, and the works have been rendered in a scoring which does not correspond to his intentions. The present new edition attempts for the first time to reconstruct them as closely as possible to their original form. The edition of In convertendo is based on Rameau's autograph score from 1751. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2100600.

In his roles as Music Director at the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris and in the Royal Choir [chapel] of Louis XV, Andre Campra (1660-1744) composed numerous motets which frequently displayed the influence of contemporary opera. If today Campra is known almost exclusively for his famous Requiem, nevertheless his more than forty motets composed for soli, choir and orchestra are still awaiting discovery. Among these is a setting of Psalm 129, De profundis, published here in a new critical edition after the autograph score. The work was composed in 1723 during the first months of Campra's service to the French king and it proves to be the equal to the compositions of Michel-Richard de Lalande, who during his lifetime shaped and dominated the genre of the Grand Motet..

The large-scale church works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart include, along with his Masses, Requiem and Vespers, his four litanies, all composed in and for Salzburg. The Litany KV 125, dated March 1772, employs the identical text and nine-movement structure als its sister work, the larger-scaled KV 243 of March 1776.

For the magnificent opening of the oratorio season at the beginning of 1736 Handel presented a composition which, like hardly any of his other oratorios, gave him the opportunity to display his musical artistry: John Dryden's ode Alexander's Feast or the Power of Music, published in 1696, demonstrates the power of music by the example of the ancient hero, Alexander the Great. From the impressive lament on the death of Darius, the King of Persia, to the boisterous Praise of Bacchus Handel avails himself of the entire breadth of the musical representation of the emotions and the possibilities for expression. In the text by Newburg Hamilton added at the end of work St. Cecilia elevates the events of the ancient heathen story, which Handel expressed in plastic, skillful polyphony. Later, this homage to the patron saint of church music, Handel also present the opportunity to perform the work on St. Cecilia's Day (22 November). For the first time the present new edition is based consistently on Handel's conducting score, which he used for his own performances of the oratorio, thus not only eliminating timeworn errors, but also offering clarity concerning the choruses, the arias and recitatives, actually performed in Handel's concerts, as well as their sequence of performance. The new Carus edition offers two performance versions: the version of the premiere in 1736, as well as a revised version from 1751. Furthermore, the inclusion of the Concerto for Harp HWV 294 (CV 55.294) is also possible; Handel composed this work especially for Alexander's Feast (as an illustration of Timotheus, the ancient poet who played the lyre). For this purpose the edition contains the appropriate alternatives for the sequence of the movements. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.5507500.

If he is known at all, then generally Reichardt is known primarily as a Lied composer. This first edition of the full score of the Weihnachtskantilene makes this work for large ensemble once again accessible. This simple, homophonic setting in 16 movements is scored in some sections for double choir, whereby the higher choir can be performed effectively by a children's choir. Not least in importance is the moving poetry by Matthias Claudius, which helps to make Reichardt's work a rewarding and attractive enrichment to the traditional Christmas repertoire.
