Samsara, Alma Nox is Derek Holden's first solo tuba composition. Musically, the piece explores the biting, vicious quality of the tuba in certain registers at certain dynamics. In the process of exploring this quality of the tuba, the piece has a musical and emotional trajectory that takes the listener from the silent, pitchless depths of the tuba to the most roaring, chaotic heights. From these heights, the piece rapidly cycles back to an area similar to where it began. Although the ending is certainly conclusive, the piece does feel as though it could start itself over, continuing in an infinite, unceasing loop. Samsara, Alma Nox was finished in late 2012 and premiered by Corey Sherman in 2013 at the University of Alabama.

With Granica, Enjott Schneider presents a work in which three instruments play alongside each other in a concertante manner on an equal basis. As in most of his pieces, he makes careful use of contemporary playing techniques and combines turbulent passages with quiet, narrative phases. The one-part work starts with a 'dance of life', so called by Enjott Schneider. In the course of the piece, this lively, dynamic dance changes and eventually disappears in the 'depths of death'. Granica comes from the Slavonic and means 'border'. The work was commissioned by the Embassy of Cyprus.2 Klaviere * S. (Vibraphon, auch mit Kontrabassbogen gestrichen * Crotales, auch mit Kontrabassbogen gestrichen, ad lib. This work was commissioned by the Latvian choir Kamer within the framework of a large-scale project centered round the topic the sun. A poem by Paul de Brancion is interspersed with expressions and sayings taken from French folklore. The poetic text describing the contemporary anxiety that everything will be scorched by the sun as a result of global warming provides a response to popular opinion and cheerful idioms. The score is constructed like a descent into great depths, from the sunlight into darkness. The composition can also be combined with its sequel composition Au dessous des etoiles (Under the Stars) for mixed choir.Thierry Pecou.

Gerald Barrys new opera is based on Lewis Carrolls two beloved books, Alices Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. As with Barrys last opera, the lauded The Importance of Being Earnest, the composer has created the libretto himself from the authors original texts. Thus, the work remains faithful to many aspects of the Alice story but is trimmed and compressed into acompact 70-minute opera in one act. Barrys characteristic highspeed energy and riotous sense of humour propel the action forward inthis surreal plunge into the depths of Wonderland.

The opening movement begins high up with stylised birdsong and moves down through the registers, through Frye’s Motet, to the depths of a tuba solo. The second movement is a slow processional which revolves around a series of chords and leads, without a break, through a tutti passage in octaves to the third, which opens with a trumpet solo and moving through several fast sometimes, contrapuntal episodes to a triumphal arrival of a quotation from a Mass by Jacob Obrecht.

One of my favourite pieces of music as a child - and I still love it - was Schubert's Trout Quintet. It was partly the wonderful music, of course, so light-hearted and joyful on the surface, yet with twists and turns and murky depths of feeling too. But I also liked the picture of a trout on the album sleeve - such beautiful creatures! Last year, while resident at the Villa Concordia in Bamberg, as I took daily walks along the Regnitz river, I observed the trout as they calmly hovered and swayed in the shallows... But if they felt my shadow they were gone in a split second! If you ever get a chance to look closely at brown trout you see that they are covered in myriad brown/red spots of varied sizes; camouflage I suppose. Now those patterns seem to be mixing in my mind with the shifting colours of the spectral arpeggios that flow through this little piece. It's a watery piece, with rippling waves, shimmering surfaces and textural veils around the melodies which flow through it. But it also takes inspiration (and it's title) from a Pablo Neruda poem: the third stanza of Every Day You Play includes the line The sky is a net crammed with shadowy fish. There's no singer, but I imagine an invisible or imaginary voice somewhere behind (or beyond) the music, and so the score includes a melodic setting of the text. Even though this is not performed by a voice, the melody is always played by the ensemble - especially high register cello - making the piece something like the inverse of a song without words.
