This jubilant single-movement setting of the Latin Gloria by celebrated organist Simon Johnson has something for everyone. Scored for SATB choir with Brass Ensemble Organ and Timpani (or Organ alone) the work is highly original and packed with content including recurring rhythmic and melodic motifs harmonic twists a peaceful central section and a four-part fugue.Johnson's Choral writing is clean and concise and more experienced singers will find the vocal lines approachable and enjoyable. The instrumental Ensemble/Organ part is integral to the work featuring short interludes driving rhythms and melodic and textural interest aswell as providing support to the voices where necessary. This exciting work holds its own among more established Gloria settings and will stand the test of time.

The Gloria in Excelsis was written by Sir Charles Villiers Stanford for the coronation of HM King George V on 22 June 1911. It was an occasion of some note in the annals of British music for Elgar?s Coronation March and Parry?s grand festival Te Deum were also heard for the first time that day. In addition there was music by Thomas Tallis Orlando Gibbons and Sir John Stainer as well as by the Master of the King?s Music and organist of St George?s Chapel Windsor Sir Walter Parratt. It was published the following year as part of Stanford?s Opus 128 the Festal Communion Service for voices and orchestra which was also made available withthe accompaniment arranged by the composer for organ. However such was the popularity of the Gloria a magnificent and wholly representative example of Stanford?s genius for church music that it soon became popular as a separate piece either with organ or orchestral accompaniment and it was included in the orders of service for the coronations of HM King George VI on 12 May 1937 and HM Queen Elizabeth II on 2 June 1953.

Vivaldi's international renown came about largely as a result of his concertos which were collated and of course performed throughout the courts of Europe. Quite unlike the concertos Vivaldi's voluminous output of sacred works was hardly known beyond the purlieus of their original performance. Following the composer's death they became increasingly unknown and even today it is difficult to say how many pieces of church music Vivaldi composed.As few of Vivaldi’s church compositions can be dated on the basis of written or stylistic evidence the origins of the Gloria In D remain shrouded with conjecture.Rather than being conceived aspart of a larger Mass setting the Gloria is an independent work a cyclical composition of broad design consisting of twelve self-contained movements.
